Yesterday I saw a post on my friend Hoppy Endings bunnies page and it got me thinking. It’s Halloween month so it’s a good time to talk about BEWs.
A BEW is sort of like a Halloween ghost costume. We don’t know what’s under the costume until the bunny is test bred. BEWs have two copies of the VM gene.
So let’s try to guess Starflower Bunny Farm Fendi’s color. Based on the parents colors here are the possible choices;
Harli, blue Harli, blue otter, black otter, blk sable marten, blue sable marten, torte, blk fox, blue fox, sable magpie, dilute sable magpie, sable marten magpie, & dilute sable marten magpie. Which color do you guys hope she is? She’s due in a few days.

A couple weeks ago I made a post about this bunny. I was sooo excited that she was a female which meant she could stay. Well, I hate to say this but, she’s going to be too small to stay on. (We prefer if our future mommies are a bit broodier.) Our loss is someone else’s gain because this girl has everything. She definitely qualifies as an ESA candidate. She hops right up into my hands. She has the a good mix of curiosity, playfulness & sweetness. Black plush fur most resembles stuffed animals IMO and I estimate her adult weight to be 2.75-3.25 lbs. Bonus- her papa is Rainbow! I’ll put his photo in the comments.

We’ve spent the last five plus years working on our Mini Plush Lops’ top lines, shoulders, bones and body length. It’s quite challenging to get every quality in one bunny. Sometimes the bones, shoulder and HEC are good but the HQ is off. Sometimes everything looks good but the size is wrong. But…..I think Amethyst is close🤞 AND…..she’s the right size!!!! I included the pic of her on an angle bc even though she’s six months old she still has a cutesy look and, I wanted to show her chest width. Combining all of the qualities we want into a small package has really been a challenge.
I’m so so excited about her. I put her on the posing table today and with no effort on my part, she stood posed for about ten seconds.
If you need to force a bunny into pose then he or she probably isn’t well built. We want them to look posed as they stand naturally. Is her conformation perfect? No.
Her ancestry is from Malvina Lake Plush Lops and Aafke Van Ramshorst (import lines).

Does anyone know what type of bird this is? I heard a lot of bird-noises in my yard so I ran outside. This bird killed a squirrel (I didn’t video that part) and then she/he grabbed it with her/his talons and flew away with ease. The squirrel was not small. The squirrel is under the left wing at the moment I’m video-ing. The bird is shockingly strong and I know nothing about birds so I’m curious as to which species.

For my longtime followers..
You guys know that one of my kids is a vegetarian (and that I have zero talents as a cook). I’ve found that soups are the answer! If anyone out there is in my same situation, try butternut squash and pumpkin soups. If you want to freeze a portion, do it before you add the cream or coconut milk. I don’t have an immersion blender so I just use my regular blender. I add a dash extra cinnamon bc I luv the smell. What other vegetarian soups do u all recommend?

Let’s talk about rabbit’s nails…A while ago a family had an emergency so they asked to return their bunny. He came back here and I was saddened to see that his nails were very long. It is extremely important to clip your rabbit’s nails regularly.
I did ask the family if they had ever cut the nails. They said “no because we were afraid of the bunny bleeding”.
IF the kwik has grown out to the tip because you’ve been lax about nails….u can fix this.
The kwik will recede if you start clipping regularly. See the upper right diagram? Even if you can only clip a bit, that’s better than nothing. Just keep doing it regularly and at the correct angle.
IF you clipped a bit too much and the nail bleeds…don’t panic. You can use cornstarch to stop a bleed OR, you can buy a kwik stop styptic product that will stop the bleeding AND has bezocaine too (which is a pain killer).

Two of our breeder-quality bucks are departing very soon😓. I’m super excited for them as they move on to their Furever Family Homes but….I spent this week thinking about who they should mate before they depart🤷.
The buck in the upper pic needs a shorter bodied doe (body length is very important in this breed) so, hopefully he will pair with the choc dam. She is excellent & I luv how wide her shoulders & hips are but, I’d prefer if her crown was a bit wider and her fur was denser (hopefully the buck will correct this).
The choc Tri buck has a nice, short, mid-section. My gut says he is a good match for the Harli doe. Color isn’t a factor, our priority is type (after health & personality of course). I know that I sound like a broken record but…..as this BIP moves forward it’s important to remember that CONSISTENCY is huge. By matching these bunnies with opposite strengths…hopefully…(if I keep the right kits)…it will help our herd as we move to the next gen💜🐰👍🏻. These are import European line Mpls.
