We’d like to introduce you to winter rye.

Winter rye is a cover crop that helps build rich, healthy soil by adding organic matter back into the ground, improving soil structure, and naturally feeding the earth so it’s ready to support strong, vibrant harvests in the seasons ahead. 🌾✨.

Great harvests begin with great soil.

🌳 Orchard maintenance is an important part of keeping the farm healthy and productive.

Recently, it was time to remove an older section of the orchard. After the trees were removed, the ground was ripped and prepared for new planting. 🚜🌱

The trees in this block had passed their prime, and to keep an orchard thriving, trees must be rotated and replanted over time. While it’s always hard to remove trees, it’s all part of preparing for the next generation of growth and harvests. 🍎🌳

It took a little longer than expected for the asparagus to wake up this year—the cooler temperatures kept it in its slumber just a bit longer. 🌱❄️ But now it’s pushing through and making itself known.

We’re cutting fresh and sending it straight from the field to both of our Shawnee Springs Markets.

The peach trees have moved on from fruit production. No fruit has formed and the blossoms have now passed. This was the result of three major freeze events, which brought extended periods of cold temperatures that affected the entire orchard and the surrounding region, including peaches 🍑, apples 🍎, cherries 🍒, plums, pears 🍐, and nectarines 🍑. After inspecting several varieties, the trees have shifted their energy into strong leaf growth instead 🌿. Fruit, may we see you next year. 🌸

Warming things up in the field 🌱

Our rows are now covered to help create a more controlled growing environment. Using row covers and plastic, we’re able to trap heat from the soil, creating a warmer microclimate that protects young plants from frost, cold temperatures, and wind.

These covers act as insulation—keeping plants a few degrees warmer while encouraging faster, stronger growth through a natural greenhouse effect.

It’s all about giving each crop the best possible start, no matter what spring decides to bring. 🌿
