Tagging and banding a new baby...Kevin said "Time me, I bet I can do it in 20 seconds!"
He was correct!!
We are 30 days into calving and have 85% of the calves on the ground. Way to go girls!
We use our own genetics, and have for years. Come see our spring offering on April 16th. More details at www.builtforthelonghaul.com

These are the registered and commercial replacement heifers after being weighed, tagged, vaccinated, branded and DNA'd. They are headded back to the pasture awaiting breeding season in several months!
The brothers of these heifers will be ultrasounded next week, then semen checked, the data assembled and ready for a select group being offered private treaty starting April 16th at our spring open house! We will post the info as it is available!

In this first shot is the bred heifers moving to a pasture closer to home. I know they are hard to see in that tall grass...which begs the question, 'why is that grass so tall?" We do not use our calving pastures in the summer, only for the few months that they are calving. This gives them plenty of grazing, cover, and clean places to calve. They get an acre per head. Kevin has a saying..'this is not a bed and breakfast"..what he means is he hates when cows lay in their hay. They are fed around 90% of what they need and then graze to fill up. This can only work if they are given the right amount of protein and mineral to help digest that old dead grass. We have been doing it for 35 years now, and it seems to work!!

In the first video I was scolding the heifers as they are supposed to follow me. Instead they got in the pasture and went WEEEEEEEE! They are not trained to well to follow yet. In the second video you can see they are acting well behaved coming down the road. I would like to say it was great teaching on my part...but I am sure it had more to do with the fact that we are now 1 mile into the trek and WEEEE was not as much fun anymore!! What a wonderful Christmas blessing to have this great weather to work cattle!
