Ruling the roost

This little group of Barred Rocks is super cute. They love when the older birds are out of the coop and then can sneak up to the tippy top of the upper roost.

Just your daily reminder to dream big and fake it until you make it!

Today’s the day I hit the road for the most amazing fair of the year.

I’ve been on an apron-a-day regiment leading up to this weekend’s event and will have 134 aprons on hand, ready for their new home.

This the final The Farm Chicks event so make the time to stop by the Spokane Fairgrounds this weekend . It’s guaranteed you will fall in love with something!

I was out checking on the chickens recently and noticed one of the chickens was not like the other. It was Moonlight!

Moonlight has lived up to her name and is the more secretive of our cats so it’s always a treat to see her out and about.

Here she is doing her favorite things, enjoying the sunshine and hunting.

Thank you Moonlight for keeping the rodents at bay!

Knock on wood, we are having a relatively enjoyable spring but there have still been some hot days.

Pistachio is quite the pool aficionado and always the first to jump in and get in some good b***y scoots.

Pigs wallow mainly to regulate their body temperature, as they lack functional sweat glands and cannot pant to cool off.

The mud acts as a natural sunscreen as well as big protectant.

Plus it’s just tons of fun!

We’re seeing more birds around the property this year and that includes the cow birds.

These little birds are super fun to watch as they flit from yak to yak and in this video I caught them enjoying the water trough.

They have great taste as Bella is their favorite. I can’t post video and a pic so check out the comments for a pic of the Bella bus. I think she got up to five on her back.

These Brown-headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) follow livestock in order to forage on the ground, as the grazing yaks kick up various insects and stir up seeds, making for an easy meal.

They are also famous for a unique behavioral trait: Brood Parasitism: They do not build their own nests or raise their own young. Instead, females lay their eggs in the nests of other smaller songbird species, tricking those birds into raising the cowbird chicks.

They are just here for the party. Party on little birds!

The barnyard mix we hatched this spring ended up with 6 of the 11 being roosters.

As it goes with juvenile roosters, they had recently become quite the handful and were upsetting the hens. So it was time for them to go!

I’d separated them earlier this last week so they were easy to get to.

Under LeeLoo’s watchful eye they were all processed without incident. Not being a meat bird breed, they are relatively small but we make sure nothing goes to waste.

LeeLoo and Lucy enjoyed dehydrated liver treats this morning and I’ll be restocked with a few bags of chicken feet treats soon.

I’m really looking forward to replenishing my chicken broth supply.

How it’s going

After an exciting introduction, Wilbur and Pistachio have settled in and are often seen snuggling.

No signs of true romantic action but our fingers are crossed for her next heat.

They certainly are precious.

Dog days

During breakfast this morning Nick peeked out the window and commented, what’s wrong with LeeLoo?

My mind immediately jumped to her being injured or ill, so I raced to the window to see….her lounging on her dog bed. Lol!

Nick threatens to throw this bed away multiple times a week as she never uses it, and I protest because once in a blue moon she enjoys it. Not to say I’m right, but I do now have photographic evidence of said bed enjoyment.

It’s continued to be a pretty busy spring with the guardians patrolling pretty heavy mist nights. At one point this week the barking seemed excessive so I went out to check found both girls focused on the northern fence line with their deep barks being immediately returned by coyote yips. I apologized for disturbing them and put my ear plugs in.

If anyone needs LeeLoo today, she will be sending her sister.

Happy Saturday all!
