Lil' O Rabbitry

Lil' O Rabbitry Located in rural WA, Lil’O focuses on raising healthy, happy rabbits for meat production. Please feel free to contact us with any questions!

Lil' O Rabbitry is a farm dedicated to raising quality rabbits for meat, fur, and show. We believe that every animal should be treated with compassion and respect, regardless of their function. Thus, our rabbits are ethically and sustainably raised on site, fed quality natural feed, carefully monitored, and interacted with daily. We emphasize a holistic and humane approach to cuniculture, using ev

ery aspect of the rabbit from manure to ears, and utilizing natural medicine whenever possible. Our rabbits are housed in sheltered, spacious, easily sanitized wire cages with access to resting mats. The current herd consists of Rex, New Zealand’s, and a selection of composite meat rabbits.

Eyes are opening for this Nigel x Nonni Reza litter! Unfortunately those eyes are RED!! That means that both Nigel and Nonni are Cc, both carry Red Eyed White instead of chinchilla.

This whole breeding program is focused on producing red and chinchilla based colors for the end goal of ermine (red ee + chinchilla chl chl or chlc). That doesn’t mean they aren’t useful to the program anymore, but it does mean that both need to be paired with chin carriers, and those kits only have a 25% chance of being carriers themselves, which is a pretty big setback. This is however the first ALL REZA litter in the barn as both parents are fixed for Rex and satin, and they both have the most amazing coats, which is still a step in the right direction. You have to build the barn before you paint it…

The good news is we found out that Maximus, the broken blue tort Reza buck I kept back last year, IS a chinchilla carrier, he produced an ermine with Vision! Unfortunately that kit didn’t survive, but it did confirm some important genetic information.

What a fun find in the yard, somehow the first time I’ve seen these! Fritillaria affinis I believe, or Chocolate Lily! Spotted green and dark purple and hanging like a bell, these are a native lily, both flower and bulbs are edible!

It’s been a busy spring on the homestead! Babies galore, and egg production is peaking!

On top of the normal craziness, we added a new dog to the pack! This is Macy, a 1yo golden retriever x Pitbull (probably, mom is purebred golden, dad is unknown, we will DNA test). I didn’t want another dog, but I just had to give her a chance, she is the most wonderful girl! She’s slowly learning about farm life, we can finally be around the free range chickens with supervision, and learning rabbits aren’t to be messed with.

In other news, we’ve finished the paperwork to have our new property (gently) logged and thinned this fall! They will clear just an acre for us to begin construction, and the other 20 acres will be thinned down leaving the large healthy old growth trees and removing the small, weak, diseased, or beetle infested trees. This should leave us with a healthy forest we can easily manage going forward, AND we can get going on utilities so the real construction can begin next spring. (Looking forward to a REAL barn!!!)

In the meantime I’ve been working on manually harvesting the best grass and greens with a hand scythe to sun dry into hay for the rabbits. We also picked up a bunch of fence panels for exercise/ grazing pens, but with wildfire season coming up they will act as temporary cages in case we need to evacuate again!

Chick season is coming up, I have 10 olive eggers incubating under a hen, and a few others interested in being broody. The next round of chicks will be mutts with Brahma heavy genetics and maybe Orpington crosses, and later in the season I’ll breed for splash Marans, but I need to build them their own breeding pen first.

In lighter news…. Both litters of New Zealand’s arrived without a hitch, 5 and 6, these neighboring moms are super clean and professional in their caretaking.

And the remaining litters are growing like weeds! The oldest litter is 7 weeks and avg over 3lbs, preparing to wean tomorrow. The goal is 2lbs growth in 3 weeks, I think they can do it. The 2 week olds all have open eyes and starting to explore outside the nest!

We have a handful of rabbits moving to new farms this week, making more cage space for upcoming babes.

Sorry for the graphic post, but look at this interesting tail deformity 👀

Unfortunately Gwen the Californian didn’t do a good job with her first litter, I was really excited but she just kept wrecking nest after nest (she was provided a premade fully furred nest and I had to refill it 5x as she wrecked and pottied in the nest, I eventually just filled the whole cage with straw in case) but she just didn’t get the memo. Her 3 kits were spread out and already passed on by the time I found them.

While attempting to revive them, I found that one has the most interesting balloon animal, wrecking ball of a tail! Just a blob on a string of tissue with a teeeny bit of peach fuzz. The other two had full tails (see last pic). Just interesting! Would it have fallen off, or been a little dangly puff? Who knows.

A sad morning but nothing goes to waste here. This one will go to the freezer to become an educational wet specimen one day, and the rest will still feed the family, as breakfast for my pups. (my psycho little dog is dancing like it’s Christmas morning, she can’t read the room!)

It’s that time again! 3 girls due this week on Thursday, 2 experienced New Zealand Whites Taxlady and QT Pie, and a first timer Californian doe Gwen!

All three got straight to work nesting when they got their boxes last night, and Gwen is enjoying the upgrade to a big girl cage! Even if her sister next door is really nosy… I have high hopes for beautiful litters from these eager ladies! I’ve been having fun with my colorful spring crossbreeds, but sometimes it’s nice having some basic, white purebreds to work with.

I wasn’t feeling quite content with just three April litters ( looking ahead for July harvest) so I went ahead and bred FIVE more does, due the 18th. Today we’re doing pregnancy checks to see what this month will look like!

Ummm, when did you get so cute D2? She just turned 1 and hasn’t been bred yet. I planned on selling her, but maturity is looking pretty good on her and she’s ready to see a buck, so I guess she gets a name now, Doris!

Last picture is from November, she’s matured a lot, feels a lot more cohesive and balanced.

This is the only kind of unboxing video I want to watch!

Quick head count for 2 week old New Zealand’s from Cecelia, plus a Reza foster from Norah!
