EarthStar Farm, Whitefish

EarthStar Farm, Whitefish EarthStar Farm is a project of love started by Susan and Chad Waite. In 2011 they created a organic full-circle family farm. In our modern world, few things are as radical as growing food naturally for our community.

Be the change!

Hi EarthStar peps. There will be fresh tree- picked ripe figs picked in the morning from our very own EarthStar trees at Third Street market mid-day on Wednesday. If you've never had a fig only hours off the tree, you NEED to experience it! Quantities are limited and time is limited as the harvest is measured in a week or so. Enjoy!

This is our farm in a nutshell, sheep, dogs, mountains, glorious skies, radiant health. (we also have lots of other living being things going on, but this recent evening sings to my heart)

Our first lambs of the year. Always a really spiritual moment!

Hi all,
I hope you all are doing well in these unique times! i know a lot of you out there are buying our microgreens at local retail outlets. Needless to say, at this point in time getting to the grocery store is a social exposure. We are thinking of some ways that we could set up a CSA like program with a safe pick up spot for our greens. One thought is to leave a cooler at the end of our drive on certain days full of greens. You stop by pick 'em up. We have a Square account as well as Venmo, so payment could be easy electronically. I will be planting for the week of March 30 this weekend, so I'd like to gauge interest. Be safe!

Its Wool Week 2019!

#WoolWeek aims to champion and educate consumers about the benefits of wool, whilst showcasing innovative and contemporary wool products across fashion and interiors. A goal is to showcase and raise awareness of wool as a planet-friendly fiber that biodegrades in the land and in the ocean. The focus, and messaging, will be to invite consumers to ‘Make A Difference and to Choose Wool’

When you invest in wool, you are investing in life, and the recycling of life.

Wool is:

- Made from biogenic carbon

- Long-wearing, odor and stain resistant, and consuming less water and energy in typical wear cycles

- Inherently biodegradable, and so readily returned to the natural carbon cycle

How are you incorporating wool into your lifestyle?

#wool #choosewool #makeadifference #sustainable #campaignforwool 💚🐑

GARDENERS NEEDED!!

Last week we had a soft rollout of a new web & mobile site called Grotopo.com. Its a joint venture between me, Seth Henry Roberts, ZaneRay, Leslie Lowe and a number of our friends. Its still in Beta and many more features will be forthcoming. The site allows you to create an account, track your garden, log your plants growth, harvest data, dates of planting, sprouting, flowing, or the first fruit, or show off the food you cook with your harvest. You can collaborate with other gardeners to compare your plants with others, or get help with any challenges you run into within your garden. Our goal is simple: to help the world be more successful at growing their own food. Whether you are a beginner gardener or a seasoned pro, WE NEED YOU.

We also are printing tags with QR codes on them to quickly allow you to jump right to the right page for each species you plant.

To check it out, simply head to https://grotopo.com and create an account today! We know we are a little late to track the full season, but its not too late to track your harvest or show off the yummy food you make with it!

Why Does Asparagus Make Your P*e Smell?

Lambing season approaches! We should start to have these delightful, beautiful gals & guys around in the next week. I can't say definitively how many ewes are with child(ren) but it looks like 15-18.

Our most challenging day of the year is now in the past. Shearing! Thanks so much to our crew: Tanner, Jenna, Ian & Eli. We love you all and are blessed to have you in our lives! Thanks for our helpers. The amazing knitter and the foremost hat maker of Flathead Valley, Lisa Aiken! The ever great friends and inspiration, Dick & Diane Ward, who as shepherds inspire and educate us every day. And especially to our shearer Katherine Ritchie. You were awesome! And thanks for bringing along your Dad, Scott, I enjoyed him immensely. And of course your daughter Mary. She was SO much fun dancing with us all, while you were ‘dancing ‘ with our sheep.
Awesome day!! Too bad the semi-naked girls are in the paddock in a blizzard!

Hi to all of our supporters! Our first newly labelled microgreens went on the shelves in many places in Whitefish and Kalispell on Friday! Susan delivered 25 dozen eggs to Third Street Market late on Friday. More will be there on Tuesday along with our microgreens. Let me tell you that there is NOTHING better than EarthStar scrambled eggs with a liberal portion of our microgreens on top. Susan and I had them for breakfast this morning. YUMMY!

Custom Woolen Mills

I was just at Custom Woolen Mills in Alberta on Monday, picking up the various finished yarns (200 lbs of spun yarn!!!) from the 300 lbs of raw wool I drove up there last April. Hooray for our lovely sheep girls and the gift of wool they give us every springtime!

Touring the vintage factory floor will convince you that time-travel is a reality

Winter arrived at EarthStar and NW Montana in the past few days. Snow, snow and more snow. The farm is pretty much put to bed except for the new greenhouse that we finished today. What we will be doing there will be for you to guess for the next couple of days. Pics of the new operation on Sunday/Monday
Happy December to all!

Happy Thanksgiving from EarthStar Farm, its owners, its 6 dogs, 164 chix and 49 sheep!
New things are happening in the New Year. Keep an eye out!

09/28/2016

Thanks to all of our, customers, friends and supporters for the wonder Farmers Market of 2016. We thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for being a part of our farm and passion. Next week our eggs will be back at Third Street Market in Whitefish until next years market. Other things are coming along here on the farm. We are finally going to heat the greenhouse this coming winter. So we plan on offering fresh "dirt grown" cilantro, basil, parsley and some other stuff. Our web site will be on-line soon. We'll let you know when that happens, and all of our activities for the winter will be available there. Thanks again!

Hello, Are your eggs soy free?
How are all you fellow Covid wedding p*eps doing? Anyone had their “when Covid is over wedding yet?” Here’s to one year together! ❤️ Alex Moser 1.) Pictured in the lambing barn in full wedding attire 2.) Getting ready for the wedding. Showing the back of the dress made of wool fabric purchased as a gift from Lani's Lana - Fine Rambouillet Wool by my dear friend Stephany and hand sewn by the most wonderful mother in law a bride could ask for. I attempted to help but it turns out covering buttons was the extent of my sewing capacity at the time.😅 I have since improved. The shawl is one of two hand knit by my mother and grandmother from wool I sheared at a friends farm in MT. I’m so thankful I had a way to represent them when they unfortunately could not be there. (EarthStar Farm, Whitefish Lola Work Pat Sublette) 3.) A small Covid friedlyish wedding featuring immediate family of the groom a few shearing mates and a last minute ordained classmate of the groom. Moonrise Shearing 4.) Mary watching “the kiss” while holding her bouquet and wearing a hand sewn wool jacket. (Thank you again Esther!) 5.) Walking away as an official family 6.) The best mother in law in the world and her pretty cool husband with their newlyweds. 7.) Taking our wonderful photographer Amanda Fritz Photography on a little tour and looking for somewhere fun to take some photos. 8.) Mary and mama snuggles 9.)Tori Abel stepping into my sisters place and legitimately make me laugh my butt off even though I was missing my sister terribly. 10.) Are you even sheep farmers/shearers if you don’t catch and hold lambs for a photo in full wedding garb? I seriously cannot thank the people who made this happen enough. One of these whom is not pictured is my sister in law Trixie who went above and beyond to help set everything up and arrange the bouquets and so much more. Thank you.❤️

We had a blast at Earthstar Farm Whitefish a few weeks ago! All the ladies and gentlemen got their fall pedicures! Wrangling sheep is a great addition to my fall schedule. If anyone raises sheep, llamas or alpacas for thief fleece - I would recommend biannual trimming. 🐑🦙🐏 📸 Kendra Wainscott Studios
RESILIENCE IS GOOD... WE’RE FORTUNATE here in Whitefish to have our very own outdoor pre-school, Foxtail Förskola, located at Earthstar Farm Whitefish!
So many people have asked about the wool from our sheep, and how it is spun up into the various different yarns that we sell at local retail shops here in the Pacific Northwest. This is a delightful short TV story on one of our two different spinners. Custom Woolen Mills is located in the tiny farm-town of Carstairs, Alberta. They spin our wonderful artisanal "Aran" and "Super Bulky" "EarthStar Naturals" brand yarns on antique (nearly 150-years old) machinery sourced from Eastern Canada decades ago. It's pretty darn cool to see the old machines kept up and still in action today. Enjoy the film!
