A little update from the field…
So many flower farms around us were hit hard by the late freezes this year. It’s been a tough peony season for a lot of growers.
Somehow, ours came through untouched — and now we’re standing here with a field full of buds just waiting for sunshine.
Because of that, I’ve opened a final 5-day window for the Peony CSA
This season is always short and fleeting, and once harvest begins, that’s it. But right now, there’s this brief moment of abundance… and I’d love to share it with you.

It’s still early out here… nothing but rows of dirt and a lot of waiting.
But in a few weeks, this will be the golden hour flower field
We only get a short window of this each year, and it goes fast.

The peonies are juuuust starting to bloom.
I haven’t been promoting the peony CSA because I wasn’t sure I was going to have a crop! All the rain and late freezes have nipped so many of the bushes across the Valley but for some reason our bushes have been spared and the blooms look healthy!
So I’m extending the peony CSA for 5 days only and then they’ll be gone for another year. So if you thought you missed out on the peonies, you’re in luck! Zip over to the website (in the bio) and place your order.

It doesn’t look like much yet… just brown soil, landscape fabric, green pastures (w a random couple of tools left out) and a lot of work behind the scenes.
But in a few weeks, this will be armfuls of flowers, golden hour light, and you out here filling your own bouquet
We only get a short window of this each year, which makes it feel even more special.

So I have a killdeer family that decided to lay eggs in the flower fields last week! They don’t build nests but instead just lay their eggs out in the open. Then the mama flits around and makes a fuss to draw predators (like big scary flower farmers) away from the nest if they get too close- like this mama in the last picture. We won’t bother them or come close to the nest again. The weeds can wait until the babies hatch out.

The next several days are predicted to be warm and dry- only to be followed by 3 days of rain. So I’ve got my head down weeding, planting and fertilizing 100s of plant starts. It’s a mad dash before the weather changes.

This is a lisianthus plant baby.
Every year I start about 100 of these in my basement grow room. They grow SUPER slowly so I plant the seeds just after Christmas.
A million things can happen to a plant that takes 6 months to grow large enough to plant outside- most my failures to get them to this stage has to do with carelessness: not enough water, too much water, sickness (I was sick in bed for three days back in April and nothing got watered during that time. I lost a bunch.)….
So this is one of 34 survivals out of the original 100 seeds I started back in December.
And now it’s time for her to find new life out in the flowers fields w all her sisters!
Can’t wait to see this little baby fulfill its destiny!

This is celosia( the “Flamingo” variety)
I’ve grown this successfully many times in other climates. But I have not been so successful here in MT. I always thought it was just too chilly here- at least in my little micro-climate.
But I figured I’d give it another shot w El Niño visiting this summer. It really is the most beautiful plant. Hopefully this will be the year!!!

One more cold night, babies.
Just one more then we’ll go out to play!!
