It’s Tulip Time!

Tulips are Farmer Charity’s idea of a perfect flower. Sweet, concise, simple, yet quietly bold.

The only sad part is they aren’t around for long. So stop by the farmstand and grab yours before they are gone!

Every day new colors emerge, and it’s such a joy to witness! Charity binged on some bulbs a year ago when she was stuck in a dark theatre in tech (😂) and planted them in November, so the wait has been LONG for these to emerge! But so worth it!!

We’ve got the Gagootz! If you’ve never had the Italian summer squash Cacuzza, your Grandpa would be ashamed. Similar to Zucchini, it can be steamed, roasted, grilled, stuffed like a pepper or used in a soup. Sauté it with some of our garlic and onions? Fuggetaboutit. Hit us up if you’d like to try some, we even have a killer recipe for you! 🤌🏽🇮🇹

Attention City Friends!!

We have an ABUNDANCE of produce right now, and since many of you have been asking…we will be in the city this coming Sunday, July 13th! If anyone is interested in a bag brimming with fresh, organically grown goodness, please let us know. We can deliver right to your stage door, or meet somewhere midday in Midtown for a handoff.

An insulated, reusable bag (which will be yours to keep) will be stuffed with, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, garlic scapes, herbs, scallions, and a few other fresh goodies.

Also available for purchase are bouquets of flowers, lovingly picked by Cora, and our wildly popular Refrigerator Pickle Kits, assembled by Charity with help from Joey (it’s a family affair!) These kits contain everything you need to make 2 full pints of homemade pickles!

A few months ago, we sat down and after much discussion, decided to do things a little differently on the farm this season.

We ultimately came to the conclusion that we were going to pause our CSA for a number of reasons:

*We had a bunch of big farm projects that needed completion, and we are delighted to be checking those things off the list!

*We wanted to have space to trial some new crops, and that has been very exciting!

*We wanted to have a bit more flexibility of schedule to ensure that we as a family have SUMMER FUN together. The kids are wonderful ages to go on adventures, and so we consciously made that a priority. In fact, we just returned from a 10-day vacation in our Airstream and it was WONDERFUL!

*At the time of our planning, we were both working full-time Broadway jobs, and knew that Farmer Charity would be on a new show all spring. Time is a serious necessity for running a CSA, and it’s still just the two of us (with a little help from the kids, when they have it in them…for 10 minutes. 😆)

But even though our CSA is on pause, we wound up planting just as much, if not more! And if we are being perfectly honest, we feel so very good about the state of the farm - better than we ever have! We credit our no-till methods, organic compost for great soil health, THE RIGHT TOOLS, and learned efficiency.

But we are so proud of us, for so many reasons. We set out to do this farm thing 5 years ago, and it definitely is not easy breezy. But we absolutely love this farm life and the hard work it entails. It is truly hard, sweaty work, but all of it gives us real, deep satisfaction.

We have successfully off-loaded our produce so far this season through various outlets, but we are now entering prime Farmstand season!! Think cucumbers, beans, summer squashes, fresh herbs, pickle kits (!), bouquets, and soon to be tomatoes and garlic! So many summer goodies are upon us now, so please stop by the Farmstand any time, and keep an eye on us here for what’s available!

Friends, our minds have been blown!!

We only recently were told about “Green Garlic” (thank you local farm friend!) so we gave it a taste test, and WOW. Our lives have been changed!! We are already thinking that we’re going to double our garlic production next year so we have just as much of this as we do storage garlic. IT IS UNREAL!

Basically, it is immature garlic, pulled before the cloves fully form, and the entire thing is edible, because the stalks are still soft and pliable. Think leek, but with a mild garlic flavor profile. It has really blown our minds, and we can’t believe we didn’t know anything about this before. We are thrilled to still be able to learn new things every day!

We have a VERY limited supply this year because we planted what we knew we wanted for storage garlic, so we can’t take too much away from that. So grab it while you can. But also, if you see this at a farmer’s market, TRY IT. Trust us!! And next year we’ll promise to have more!
