Gyppo Ale Mill

Gyppo Ale Mill Shelter Cove Restaurant, Brewery & Beer Garden... In the same spirit as the craft beer industry, A Gyppo logging operation was small & self-reliant.

The Gyppo logger was reckless & daring & did what they had to get the job done. Here at the Gyppo Ale Mill, we celebrate that spirt & raise a pint to all the Gyppos out there, living a freewheeling & independent life. Perched on the edge of the world, along the longest stretch of coastal wilderness in the lower 48, is where you will find the Gyppo Ale Mill, California most remote restaurant & br

ewery. Gyppo offers a from scratch & locally sourced food menu that shifts with the changes of the seasons as well as 12 beers on tap. If life brings you the "Real Northern California", that place 4 hours north of San Francisco, do yourself a favor, take a turn off the 101. Twenty-One miles of winding road is just the beginning of the epic adventure you are about to take!

Nya, Catherine, Jesse, Anna and a few of our other favorite locals ended up around the fire, and I have no idea what was being discussed when this picture was taken. I'm going to keep it that way. 😉 The fire pit has quietly become one of my favorite parts of the beer garden because this is what happens around it. The Lost Coast cools off, somebody moves a chair closer to the fire, another person joins them, and whatever plans everyone had to head home seem to get pushed back a little bit.

Come out for dinner this weekend and give yourself enough time that you don't have to turn around and leave as soon as you're done eating. Grab a chair by the fire, have another beer and see who wanders over. And if 21 winding miles home suddenly doesn't sound appealing, the Lost Coast has plenty of places to stay.

Last year we started our Community Dinners as a way to bring the people who grow, raise, catch and forage our food together with the people who eat it. We put 45 people around the table, let our culinary crew build five courses around what comes from this place, and got to spend an evening actually talking to the farmers, fishermen, ranchers and foragers behind the food. We loved it enough that we're doing the whole thing again. Year two is Land. Water. Hands. — five Community Dinners celebrating the people and food of the Lost Coast.

Save the dates: October 16, November 13, December 11, January 15 and February 12. We'll release each menu about 30 days before the dinner, and each night is limited to 45 seats. Put your favorites on the calendar now, bring someone you'd like to sit around a table with, and come back for another season of eating together.

This is Ken at Paint & Sip, being Ken. He's a freaking ham, he's hilarious, he'll go along with pretty much anything, and I love that nobody takes themselves too seriously at these things. This month we're painting Jenni's Fisherman Captain boat down on Lower Pacific — if you know, you know. I love that we're painting something that's actually ours, something locals have driven past a thousand times, and everybody will go home with their own slightly different version of this little piece of Shelter Cove.

We're painting Jenni's boat September 1 at 6PM, and every month I convince myself we're probably not going to sell out...and then we do. So I'm finally learning to tell you guys to grab your tickets before the last minute. Come have dinner, order a drink, paint Jenny's boat and, if we're lucky, Ken will provide some of the entertainment.

This is our brewery. Four 10-barrel fermenters, one 10-barrel bright tank and our JV Northwest brewhouse (not in photo 😉 ), with basically one person doing the majority of the work and another jumping in when needed. We buy the raw ingredients. We brew the beer. We clean the tanks, move it, keg it, count it and tag it. Then it travels a few feet to the taproom and somebody pours it into your glass. We are a very small brewery in a very small town making our own beer at the end of a very long road.

You don't have to make the 21 winding miles to Shelter Cove to drink Gyppo, though we'd certainly love it if you did. North Coast Mercantile distributes our beer, so you can find us at bars, restaurants and shops around the North Coast — and if your favorite watering hole doesn't carry Gyppo yet, ask them to put us on tap or get some cans in the cooler. Every pint you drink out in the wild still started right here in this little brewhouse.

Every one of these grass-fed beef patties was portioned and formed by somebody, aka Joe, Kai, Ryleigh, Dakoriya, Rowan, Lashaw, in our kitchen. It would be cheaper and easier to buy a box of identical frozen patties and call it good. There are plenty of things we simply can't make here — I'm not asking our kitchen to start baking hamburger buns — but where we can start with the raw ingredient and make it ourselves, we try to. It means our patties aren't perfect circles. It also means they're handled less, stay loose and cook the way we want them to.

If you haven't made the drive out for a while, come hungry and let us make you dinner. Order a burger, get the fries and grab a beer that was brewed right here while you're at it. It's a long way to come for dinner, but we think what we're making out here is worth the drive.

This is Wendy on a Wednesday, and honestly this photo says a lot about living out here. It's foggy, she's got a co****le bag flying through the air, there are friends on the other end of the boards and nobody seems too concerned that Wednesday isn't technically the weekend. Our locals have kept this going week after week, and I love them for it. You can hear the bags hitting the boards from the beer garden, somebody is keeping score, dinner is coming out and people who came for one beer are still here two hours later.

Co****le starts at 5:30 on Wednesdays, and you don't have to play to come hang out. Make the drive, have dinner, drink a beer we made right here and see what a Wednesday in Shelter Cove looks like. If you haven't been out in a while, maybe Wednesday is the night.

Dakoriya made dessert, and clearly she wasn't messing around. I caught her in the kitchen with this whole tray lined up and ready to go, looking pretty proud of herself — as she should. This is one of my favorite things about having a scratch kitchen. So much happens back here before your plate ever makes it to the table, and sometimes I remember to stop long enough to take a picture of the person who actually made it.

I love watching our crew learn, create and take pride in what they're putting out. They're always trying something, improving something, or making the next batch, and I think that care shows up on the plate. Come see us this week, eat something good, and definitely ask what's for dessert.

Of every possible place this guy could have chosen to stand, he planted himself directly underneath our NO PETS sign and looked at me like he was prepared to discuss the matter personally. I mean, look at that face. Unfortunately, even an extremely convincing Frenchie can't negotiate his way around California law about pets inside restaurants, so our tiny attorney lost his appeal. He did, however, make me laugh hard enough that he earned a picture.

The good news is dogs are absolutely welcome outside in our beer garden, and we even have a doggie menu for them. A 6-ounce, grass-fed, hand-formed beef patty all to themselves, because apparently coming to Gyppo and watching your humans eat while you get nothing would just be rude. Bring your road-trip buddy, grab a table outside, order lunch for yourself and something for them, and stay awhile. Everybody deserves a good meal after making it all the way to Shelter Cove.
