Smoky Mountain grown turmeric!

That's right, last year I did a little experiment to see if I could grow some turmeric. No greenhouse, no pampering, no pulling in the Fall. These babies were in the ground with nothing but mulch as protection all winter long, and it happened to be one of our worst Winters in a long time.

Since it was an experiment, I only started with two rhizomes. Those two rhizomes gave us nearly one pound of turmeric for the kitchen and six mothers to grow out this year. That is God's abundance at work!

Stay tuned for more fun gardening experiments happening this year...

Merry Christmas!
Our Christmas Eve sunset.

It was an amazing day with sunny skies and a high of 72°F! Weird after our several weeks with lows in the 20's.

25 little seeds...

Last March, I went to an organic growers conference near Asheville. They had a seed swap booth and I picked up some local old time favorites: Hickory King Dent corn and Sugar Drip sorghum.

Mind you, I got 25 seeds of each! Of those 25, I probably only got half to grow into decent plants. One corn stock grew to 15 feet tall and one sorghum was 12 feet tall. This with no-tilling, fertilizer, and no weeding!!!

Now for the amazing abundance... from 12 corn plants, 6lbs of corn, and from 10 sorghum plants, 4 lbs of sorghum.

I will be keeping the best grains for planting out next year and sharing with our library's seed bank.

When life seems to be full of scarcity, remember God has built-in abundance.

You win some, you loss some...

Our cantaloupes were amazingly prolific this year. Though not used to the South and it's plethora of bugs, namely the pickle worm, we lost most. At least the chickens with eat well.

The Candy Roaster Winter Squash produced a massive 18 pounder! With more on the way.

Better than last year 😉

Amid all the rain, our potatoes and yard long beans have done well! "Better than last year!" 😊

I needed to transplant some turmeric that I got from the Organic Growers School Spring Conference (back in March). So we harvested a couple of potato plants to make space. We ended up with 2.8lbs. Not a huge harvest, but as my wife has gotten into the habit of saying, "It's better than last year!"

As side note: Last year I worked on the garden a lot and we ended up with one tomato and a handful of lettuce leaves.

As amazing as fireworks on the 4th of July can be, I'm not sure they surpass nature's show of colors.

Some early Summer bounty:

The first zucchini, collard greens (this one was huge!), and some lettuces.

I didn't get a picture, but we've been eating green beans every other day for weeks.

The tomatoes are still green, potatoes are almost ready, and onions too.

When our house crawl space was encapsulated, they had pulled out the usual thick black plastic. This I've learned, makes for a great way to suppress the tenacious grasses of the South. It's a no-till and pesticide free way to prepare soil for planting. I learned this after rototilling our garden the first year we were here. We ended up with a bumper crop of weeds. The only downside is it takes two to three months to kill the grass. Lord, grant me patience...
