Did you know that millet, sorghum, and buckwheat are not only naturally gluten-free but also packed with nutrients?

When I first got my grain mill, I thought I’d just be milling wheat. But these three grains have completely opened up a whole new world of baking and cooking! Millet is rich in magnesium, sorghum offers fiber and antioxidants, and buckwheat is a great source of plant-based protein.

And that’s really the difference.

A conventional dairy has to build systems that work safely and efficiently for an entire herd. Those systems have to be teachable and repeatable so multiple people can follow the same protocols and keep the dairy running consistently.

My “system” can be a whole lot more personal.

I know these two cows.

I know what their udders normally feel like. How much they usually eat and drink. How they walk into the stanchion. How much milk they give. Which calf has been nursing where.

And sometimes it’s something I could never put into a protocol:

Her eyes look tired today. Something isn’t right.

So I watch her. I change the plan. I figure out what’s going on.

I’ve made very intentional choices about how I want to raise my cows and produce our food. I believe calves should stay with their mothers, so mine do. I want my cows on pasture. I want to drink our milk raw and make cheese from milk that’s still warm from the cow.

Those choices matter deeply to me. They also don’t have to be the choices everyone else makes.

Conventional dairies are doing a fundamentally different job at a fundamentally different scale.

There’s room for both.

And I’m incredibly grateful this little dairy lets me do things my way. ♥️

The homesteading rabbit hole is absolutely unhinged.

One minute you’re buying cheese at the grocery store like a normal person.

Next thing you know, you own a dairy cow and your w**e fridge is full of cheese.

“YESSSS. Look at you. So fuzzy.” 🥹😂

Anyway, the Camembert is doing great! Can’t wait to eat it in about 4 weeks!

Okay, let’s answer the goldfish questions. 😂

Last year I shared why we keep goldfish in our cattle tanks and apparently I opened Pandora’s fish tank.

🐟 Why are they in there?
A friend with a giant koi pond needed to rehome about a dozen small goldfish and koi and asked if our boys wanted them. Obviously, they did. 😂 So into the stock tanks they went!

🐟 Do the cows ever eat them?
No!! They’ve lived together quite peacefully for years.

🐟 What about fish waste?
We clean the tanks regularly, but honestly, the cows are much dirtier than the fish. 😂 Stock tanks collect dust, debris, whatever the cows backwash into them, and algae can grow quickly in the summer.

🐟 Do you still clean the tanks?
Yep! Goldfish are not tiny aquatic housekeepers. Unfortunately. 😂

🐟 How do they survive winter?
Our tanks can’t be allowed to freeze anyway because the cows need access to water 24/7. A single cow can drink a LOT of water each day, and we have four cattle using these tanks.

We top them off daily year-round. If ice forms, I break it several times a day, and during an Arctic blast I’ll add a drop-in tank heater.

🐟 Are the fish safe for the cows?
Yep. Cattle with access to ponds, streams and other natural water sources have been drinking water that contains fish and other aquatic life forever. Our cows remain deeply unconcerned about their drinking buddies. 😂

I also have a random song for every occasion, so this was going to go one of two ways.

If you try to tell me you never had one of these inspirational signs in your house, I won’t believe you — ha!
