I read this post today and it felt true. I don’t raise cattle with reason. I think growing up with them around in abundance ruined me to wanting any. I used to think a brisket was gross and cheap food (joke was on me). I didn’t eat hot dogs, hamburgers, or brisket for years after I left home because I was used to having them and I just grew sick of it. Also keep in mind my dad’s burgers are THICK so when I did start eating burgers again I thought smash burgers were amazing. No worries folks, I’ve come to my senses.
Anyhow, so although we don’t have a grazing animal like cattle we rely heavily on the rain. Our feed bill is astronomical for our swine. I wish they only needed to graze that would be cheaper for us. The truth is those crops we feed them need rain. Those wallows need rain. Just yesterday I was talking about hiring a water truck company to come and fill some watering totes for us so we don’t drain our well for the pig waterers. We’re building as many water catchment systems as we can because we’re trying to save every lost drop of rain. Our water table is down and for years our farm and family have solely relied on well water and rain water to operate. City restrictions are in place for water conservation/restrictions (doesn’t apply to us, but everyone is supposed to be cherishing the rain right now). We get rain, but sometimes it’s not enough.
We’re not a commercial operation raising commercial meats. Instead we’re taking more time to grow our animals outdoors in a natural environment. That means we need natural resources. We rely on them for every step of the way to grow the garden and fruit/nut bearing trees. We rely on them to ensure the animals stay alive and thrive. We rely on them for the pastures and forests. We need those natural resources like rain and when we don’t get it, we have to make tough decisions.
So, THANK YOU to my community for supporting us and helping us to get through. We know that when we have to make changes we can do it because our community supported us. Small, local businesses rely almost solely on our community and I happen to believe I landed in the best community. Thank you for allowing us to keep doing what we love and make it through the challenges we face as small business owners. Thank you for the support and the grace you give us.
