Water catchment, wallow, and naturally thriving in the heat! If there’s one thing THIS farm knows, it’s how to raise swine in the worst heat!

Just a little announcement that if you need Pig Wing Farms we will be unavailable for a bit. Our weekend is packed in and unfortunately my phone has officially died on me. iPhones aren’t farm tough apparently. I won’t be around a computer.

I read this post today and it felt true. I don’t raise cattle with reason. I think growing up with them around in abundance ruined me to wanting any. I used to think a brisket was gross and cheap food (joke was on me). I didn’t eat hot dogs, hamburgers, or brisket for years after I left home because I was used to having them and I just grew sick of it. Also keep in mind my dad’s burgers are THICK so when I did start eating burgers again I thought smash burgers were amazing. No worries folks, I’ve come to my senses.

Anyhow, so although we don’t have a grazing animal like cattle we rely heavily on the rain. Our feed bill is astronomical for our swine. I wish they only needed to graze that would be cheaper for us. The truth is those crops we feed them need rain. Those wallows need rain. Just yesterday I was talking about hiring a water truck company to come and fill some watering totes for us so we don’t drain our well for the pig waterers. We’re building as many water catchment systems as we can because we’re trying to save every lost drop of rain. Our water table is down and for years our farm and family have solely relied on well water and rain water to operate. City restrictions are in place for water conservation/restrictions (doesn’t apply to us, but everyone is supposed to be cherishing the rain right now). We get rain, but sometimes it’s not enough.

We’re not a commercial operation raising commercial meats. Instead we’re taking more time to grow our animals outdoors in a natural environment. That means we need natural resources. We rely on them for every step of the way to grow the garden and fruit/nut bearing trees. We rely on them to ensure the animals stay alive and thrive. We rely on them for the pastures and forests. We need those natural resources like rain and when we don’t get it, we have to make tough decisions.

So, THANK YOU to my community for supporting us and helping us to get through. We know that when we have to make changes we can do it because our community supported us. Small, local businesses rely almost solely on our community and I happen to believe I landed in the best community. Thank you for allowing us to keep doing what we love and make it through the challenges we face as small business owners. Thank you for the support and the grace you give us.

Officially introducing Imperial Ottis. This good looking boy is getting so big so fast and we just love him! We have no doubt that he’s going to add to our Meishan program and bring even more wonderful Meishan pigs to our farm and to other farms.

A little mowing by the youngest of the crew. He gave his crocs a real ombré shade. This is seriously how I remember so many of my shoes growing up and to be completely honest, most times it was just my feet because I think for years I didn’t know what shoes were lol. Barefoot running wild kind of childhood. We fed some of the grass clippings to the birds. To be honest I really just want them to pick through and get the bugs off and then use some as mulch around certain areas, but this vibrant greenery is a huge part of how these ladies get that wonderful & deep yellow/orange coloring in their yolks. They won’t make a much of a dint in this as there is so much, but they will kick it around where I laid it and it will mulch an area for me.

Go have a great day everyone and we’ll see you tomorrow for our Farmer’s Market in Fredericksburg 3-7pm. I’ll post the address and a flier SOON!

This week we will only be at 1 market on Wednesday. Life passes us by so quickly and sometimes we really have to jump to catch some of those moments. We will be spending some much needed times with those that matter to us and Pig Wing Farms will be taking a bit of a small break. When you have the opportunity to enjoy those that matter most take it. Tomorrow is not promised to anyone.
We will be back soon! We just need to make these precious moments a priority.

If you need to place an order for weekly drop off we can still fulfill those orders, we will just need to be more creative with the schedule. We did FINALLY update our store on the website and sheesh, so much “out of stock”. Normally that’s not ideal, but at the same time, THANK YOU for making that happen! We added new items and we’ll add more again SOON! Currently working on making that magic happen.

*Boarsey enjoying his food with the teenage chicks. They steal all his food despite being fed near him and around the same time. I think I’m going to start getting a custom blend of chicken feed because all the chickens prefer the hog feed.

When I say bit, I highly doubt there was any pain and more of a scare. This snake is small and the boar not so much.
