This morning, as we want to go check livestock, we are experiencing a blizzard, powered by 50 mile an hour winds coming from the Nothwest. We have significant drifting of snow. Attached are shots from our backyard.

This morning, while feeding and checking our feeder cattle, there was a small, baldy, addition to those being fed out. Yes, one of the ladies had given birth either later last night during the snow and rain storm, or, early this morning. The newborn was up and nursing on Mom, when I first saw it. I took this picture after I finished my chores with the cattle.
The newborn was dry, clean and just sitting there. Will check for its s*x, and look it over hopefully this afternoon. Mom is being very protective, so, will see what I can see. An ear tag and Mulitimin shot will be administered soon.

The back story to this happened 9 months ago when our herd bull, BAR JDP Junior was able to get in with the girls for a short period. Looks like he was at least successful with one of our cows. Now, we need to watch the other 5 girls in being fed out to see if they may have a gift for us.

Though not planned, calves are still a gift. We are downsized as we are getting out of the beef industry by 2023. That date will change if more calves appear.

Every once in awhile, you just have to call a Vet out. The picture is of me, our herd bull BarJDP Junior, and Dr. McGregor from Fort Morgan Veterinary Clinic.

Seems Junior developed an abcess on his right cheek. In order to assure it was an abcess, Dr. McGregor and her Assitant came out. After a short period getting Junior into our squeeze chute, with the great help from our Granddaughter Deziree, and Dr.. McGregors Assistant, Dr. McGregor lanced the area on Juniors cheek, and said to to me, I can confirm it's an abcess, while a nice stream of infection was pouring from Juniors check. Thought that was humorous.

A shot of Exceed and Banamine later, Junior was returned to his corral area. In review today, Juniors cheek is alittle swollen, not not as much as yesterday. He was eating and drinking normally, which is a great sign.

Also present but not in the picture, Debbie, and our Daughter Melanie. They were watching. Debbie just had Cataract surgery the day before, and was not able to assist.

Owning livestock and family pets, barn cats and dogs, comes with a responsibility. We monitor their health, attitudes, and daily activity. Keeping them healthy is one of our central responsibilities. After all, they did not ask to come to the Ranch, we brought them here.

Debbie and I want to wish all of our Facwbook followers a very Merry Christmas and a great 2022.

Facebook very nicely pointed out that I have not posted recently. I apologize, but, this time of year we are busy.

First off we processed 6 steers. We kept one. We have been busy moving the cattle herd to different pastures. We were graced with great grass this year, so we are taking advantage of it. The first picture below is Debbie standing in the grass on our North pasture. For reference, she is 5'2" tall.

Then, there is the yearly maintenance work to the Ranch, including equipment. We had to repair our tractor and skid steer, plus, other small equipment.

Finally, we decided to completely have the flooring in the house replaced with Lifeproof flooring, professionally installed. Debbie is excited to have a newer looking house....Hey, we have been here for 17 years plus. Stuff needs to be replaced, refreshed. Next year, the front and backyard will be scrapped off, and a sprinkler system and new sod installed. We will partition part of the backyard as a dog environment [see second picture].

So, that brings you up to date on some of the many things we have been doing. Debbie anI hope this finds you well and happy.

We started spring with a pretty dry prognosis. As of today, we have been clobbered by 2 days of continuous rain. It is coming down hard and fast to say the least. Do we need anymore rain ? Not today.....LOL

Our concern shifts to how are livestock are handling the rain. Our barns are flooded. Our corrals are flooded. And the rain continues.

We go out, at least 2 times a day to check on our livestock. Not much we can do for them at this point. The cattle are definitely hardy, but, we still want to make sure they are doing well. The Horse barn is flooded. The pigs, goats, horses and donkey keep searching for dry spots to lay down. The thunder and lightening startle them constantly.

Such is life on the Ranch. Our pastures are in exceptional condition this year. The cattle will have copious amounts of hay to graze on. That is great.

We take in 6 steers this year for processing on June 11th.

And the cycle continues. This is why we love this lifestyle.

It has been quite awhile since we posted on our Ranch site. So yesterday, decided to video the cattle doing their 4:30pm Zoomies around the corral system. This happens pretty much each day. This is a way for them to burn off whatever excess energy they may have, that day. It is also fun to watch as I fill their water tanks and generally just check them out before nightfall.

Turn on you sound, and you will hear near the midpoint of the video my expert narrative....LOL

Today was a very special day for Debbie and me. Much to our surprise, Bar JDP Sara calved a beautiful heifer calf.

Earlier in 2019, we decided to downsize our herd. We took care to not let the cows and heifers get exposed to our bulls. In fact, we had separated our bulls from the girls. On one fateful night, about nine months ago, the bulls broke through the the corral system and spent some quality time with our ladies. We had hoped they had not hit any of the girls. We were very wrong.

So, at about 2:00 pm, or so today, Sara provided our newest heifer, Bar JDP Krystal. She is a great looking calf, and was up and walking around when we first saw her. Sara is a wonderful mother. She has graced us with numerous calves. Sara has been with us for 12 years.

This now leads us to believe we may expect additional calves in the coming days. Thus, we are now on calf watch. Who will be next, who knows. Will keep you all advised as we progress through the next few days and weeks.

I have attached several images of Bar JDP Sara and her calf, Bar JDP Krystal. Debbie and I are also very happy.

To all of our friends, family, etc. Debbie and I will be offline. This is due to a power failure in Morgan County. We are fine. No reason to be concerned as we are saving our available phone power. We will let everyone know when power to the Ranch is restored.

Debbie and I want to thank Dr. McGregor, and Dr. Smit and their Veterinary Assistant, all from Fort Morgan Veterinary Clinic, for the wonderful job they did getting Bar JDP Sara back to health. Sara appeared to bloat. We called and talked to Dr. McGregor, who suggested we bring Sara in. They indicated that Sara had a blockage in her rumen, thus, could not successfully digest all her feed. After tubing her several times, they were able to open up Sara's rumen. As expected, Sara was able to relieve the pressure and threw up all over the floor, barely missing Debbie in the process.

Sara is back at the Ranch with us. It appears she is in good health, eating, ruminating and not looking like she is ready to explode.

Bar JDP Sara has a special place in our hearts. She is one of our original herd cows. She has giving us many calves, and is a wonderful mother.
