We are proud to announce our spring lambs are ready for your freezer! If you're local to the Xenia/Dayton/Springfield area, our pasture-raised, grass-fed lambs are available by the whole or half. One of our whole lambs typically nets between 35 and 50 lbs of take-home product. Send a private message if you're interested!

I should have taken a picture of the lamb stew I made this weekend. I had to make it wheat-free, so I didn't flour the lamb cubes like I normally do. But I browned them anyway, cooked the stew half the day at barely a simmer in my dutch oven, and then thickened the gravy by blending some of the veg instead of using flour to thicken it.

It was delicious!

September will be a busy month! We'll be driving posts to divide our largest pasture in two down the center using permanent electric wire, which will make subdividing with temporary electric much easier and much more effective next year.

This past year, I learned from experience that rotating a small flock amongst very large pastures is really no better than continuous grazing. They had so much space and forage that they could choose their favorite plants, hang out in their favorite spots, and stroll along their favorite routes. Some of this will change as our flock grows, but mostly I need to make managing their grazing easier so that they are consistently in paddocks sized to reduce selective grazing and more evenly spread manure.

I’m going to need help with names for these two ewe lambs, born January 16th to first-time mama Glinda. (See the twister on her forehead? I’m not sure how good of a witch she might be, but she sure is a good mama!)

This is the first time I was lucky enough to see a birth start to finish, and am thrilled that she delivered healthy twins.

I have this one ewe, named Cow, who looks like she's been ready to give birth for at least three weeks. With the winter storm rolling in yesterday, we moved the flock off pasture and into the barn, and gave Cow a dedicated pen with a heat lamp.

Sure enough, this morning I woke up to -8 F ambient temperatures, -34 F windchill, and two lambs curled up under the lamp. Meet Holly and Ivy, our Christmas ewe lambs who will stay with us as part of our flock.

This here is June at three days old. Her mama became pregnant at 5 months, which was not intentional or desirable. But I suppose nature took its course, and I’m grateful she only had a single. Also pictured is June on the morning she was born shown alongside a 9 week old lamb who has only known mama’s milk and pasture. Grow, lambs, grow!

Our lambs, ranging from 55 to 60 days old, are really enjoying the pasture with their dams. I'm impressed with their little bulging rumens, and I see a few of the dams getting annoyed with suckling. Weaning time is coming, but we'll let each mama dictate that timeline this year.

Last evening after dinner, we went out to check on those Monday morning lambs, and discovered two more ram lambs out of our ewe named Oreo. We had checked on the flock two hours prior, and Oreo hadn't even shown any signs of labor! When we entered, we saw that she had already cleared the second-born's face, and was trying to finish up the first-born's bath. The tiny little "baaaah's" were adorable! Both ram lambs are active this morning, and weighed in just shy of 7 lbs each.
