Turtle. Shaking my head. Turtle had a second set of kids for the kidding season sometime around Thursday or Friday. She kidded with most of the rest of my does in early December. She’s being a good momma, especially since being a good momma at my house these days involves figuring out how to coparent with Roosevelt (the 13 month-old livestock guardian dog). Five bucklings for her this year. She also had only bucklings last year too. I’m due for some doe kids from her.

Egg/queen check. 1) close up of queen. 2)Queen on the edge of the frame. She’s a runner. 3)beautifully drawn new wax. 4) they’re finding pollen somewhere. This is also new comb. 5) coverage of bees across a frame.

I had eggs in all but one hive. I knew the queen in that hive had taken flight when I released her, but I’d hoped that she might return because I left her queen cage in the hive. The bees stayed, so I gave them some eggs from another hive that they can use to start a new queen. It’s not an ideal situation - package bees are on a clock from the beginning because of the age of bees you’re starting with. I’ll give them some young bees later on when bees start to hatch in the other hives. I’ll have to watch them pretty closely.

I got my first sting of the year. Right in the ear cartilage-one of my least favorite places to be stung.

I lost my hives this winter. I’ve installed five packages yesterday and today in a two day process following Kamon Reynolds’s installation method. I haven’t ever installed packages before, so it was a new experience and I was very nervous about it, but it turned out being much easier than I expected.

We started kidding 16 days earlier than last year. So far, four pink and three blue.

1) Snowdrop is my favorite kind of momma goat. She likes that kid to be no more than three feet away from her.

2) Roosevelt was my companion on today’s goat finding walk. Schutz was sleeping and I’m sure he worked hard last night.
