High desert grasslands at 4,200 feet turned out to be exactly what Arizona needed for wine grapes. Willcox sits in the state's largest wine-growing region, with warm days, cool nights, and mineral-rich soil that now support more than two dozen vineyards. πποΈ
The town itself started as a railroad shipping point in 1880 and later became famous as the hometown of singing cowboy Rex Allen, whose statue still stands downtown. Today the surrounding grasslands, once solely cattle country, produce some of the most award-winning wine in the Southwest.
Cattle country and wine country turned out to be the same dirt all along.
