Whetstone Prairie Dorper

Whetstone Prairie Dorper Established in 2006, we’ve developed a hardy grassfed fullblood Dorper flock with emphasis on production and breeding stock.

Our focus is on the foundational breed standard and have our flock inspected annually by certified South African inspectors.

This week we moved ewes and March/April lambs from the expansion property while merging them up with recently bred yearling ewes (for fall lambs) and put them back on the main property. They were greeted with orchardgrass that was darn near 4 foot tall. Yes, they’ll knock a bunch down but that’ll add to the organic matter out there. We’re seeing sheep in excellent condition and lambs packing pounds on with no inputs except mineral and water. Dorpers are second to none. 👊💪

Rotation continued through the holiday weekend going through some areas we’ve never grazed. Still a bit weedy in spots as the area had been pretty depleted due to less than desirable farming practices. Pasture rotation will become even more important as we move toward the summer slump with forecasts taking rain out of the equation. Pleased how our Dorper ewes and lambs are making it happen with hard to reach assist from the Savanna’s. 👊💪

Last weekend got the February AI lambs weaned off. Personally, we’re pleased with the results as the group was purely on pasture with no creep or supplementation. Growth was really good as many dams were clearly past their most productive years with an average age of nearly 6. Ram lamb weights ranged from 92lb to 58lb while ewe lambs ranged from 71 to 41. Poorest performers were on 9 year old ewes. ADG’s ranged from .456 to .798 for ewes and .631 and .827 for rams. Next month we’ll do the March born naturally bred lambs.👊💪

The February born AI lambs sired by Winrae Dorpers Thor will be weaned and on the scale this weekend. Looking forward to capturing this datapoint as there are some monsters in the group!👊💪

Moving through some thinner, weedier sections where last year’s planting wasn’t the best. Upped the size of this paddock to about 1.5 acres and we’ll likely no-till to a summer legume (like sunn h**p) on the weak spots once this area is cleaned up in a day or two then we’ll replant more cool season grasses this fall. Girls are shaggy but shed is really starting to come on with all the underbrush getting filled winter’s hair/wool. 👊💪.

Tight grazing cells are on the menu, not more than .5 to .7 acres as palatability and biomass are excellent at the moment. While it’s hard to see, there is some good plant diversity with fescue, goldenrod, orchardgrass, red clover and a few weeds. Two years ago this was basically a cockleburr patch with some poorly farmed soybeans mixed in. 👊💪
