Williamston Food Bank

Williamston Food Bank The Harold Larson Williamston Food Bank is a not-for-profit organization that provides emergency food to individuals and families in need in Williamston.

The Harold Larson Williamston Food Bank was officially started by Harold and Margaret Larson in 1970, however, the couple had been helping Williamston residents in need long before that. As Harold tells it, he and Margaret received help from their neighbors back in the late 1940's when he was struck down with polio and was unable to work for a year. During those "lean" times, the Larsons realized

how important it was to help out friends and neighbors who had fallen on hard times. The kindness they received inspired them to give back to others, and for nearly 50 years, this amazing couple helped countless needy families throughout our community. Today, the food back serves families, large and small, single parents, the elderly, the unemployed and underemployed, providing food and personal items to those in the Williamston community who need help. In the last five years, the Williamston Food Bank has grown from serving 25-30 families each month to over 100.

With the threat of SNAP benefits not being available in November, the Williamston Food Bank is preparing to help more people in our community than normal. We have already been receiving some donations in preparation of this, and we are so greatful for the generosity of the Williamston community. Thank you! If you have the ability to donate, we will work hard to put that donation to good use to help our neighbors.

Many have asked if we have a need for volunteers at the Food Bank. The short answer is yes, but we wanted to clarify what we need. We are looking for 3-4 people that are able to volunteer their time the last Friday and Saturday each month. Just a few hours each day, and the work is easy and fun. The most important part of this volunteer opportunity is committing to being available every month. If this is something of interest to you, we would love to hear from you. Please contact our volunteer coordinator Cathy Purdum at [email protected].

So many of you have been asking if we are accepting food donations yet. Currently the food bank is doing drive-by distribution. This means food is pre-packed and everyone gets the same thing. We need to have large quantities of each item, not a few of many items. With the upcoming holiday season, the food bank would like to do a limited food drive. We will only accept the following items: yams and marshmallows; cake mix and frosting; 13.75 oz. box of
instant mashed potatoes and poultry gravy and fried onions and stuffing. We are hoping to get about 100 of each item. Please make sure nothing is expired. There are 3 drop off days at the food bank, October 10, from 9-11 am, October 28, from 9-11 am and November 7, from 9-11am.

We are so grateful for the support we receive from this amazing Williamston community. We look forward to the assistance we know you will provide to make this a better holiday season for the food bank clients. If you have additional questions, please contact us at [email protected]
