One with the flock.

If a picture is worth 1000 words, here’s an essay on why having a true livestock guardian breed matters.

You can train a dog to sit, stay, and shake in 5 languages, but you can’t train what you see in this picture.

You can’t teach the seamlessness with which they work together as a pack, always ensuring each corner of their territory is covered.

You can’t give them the wisdom of knowing which birds are predators and which are simply passing through, which people are friendly and which ones to be wary of.

And you can’t train the unspoken trust they create with their animals, where watchful ewes can turn their backs on their lambs and know they’re protected.

It’s in their blood. Just as we know to avoid danger and to care for other people, these dogs know to guard. It’s something we never take for granted, and I don’t think I’ll ever stop being amazed by them.

āœŒšŸ»weeks old (+ a few days)!

If it were later in the season—or not 17 deg at night right now—we’d be getting ready to move them on to pasture, but Mother Nature won’t hear anything of the sort.

Happy 6th birthday to the biggest baby, best hugger, and most dedicated guardian on our farm: Marlin!

We can’t even guesstimate how many chickens have been saved under his watchful eye 🄺

This boy holds a special place in our hearts because he’s been here since day 1. Swipe to see him through the years!

We are looking to hire a passionate, driven person part-time to staff our market booth!

This is a part-time, seasonal position that runs May-October on weekends.

Our ideal person will:

-Have experience in customer service and/or strong people skills–this is primarily a customer service position and you will be the face of our farm!
-Have a strong interest in sustainable animal agriculture
-Have excellent communication skills
-Be available to staff a market *each weekend* early May through October
-Be reliable
-Confidently load up market supplies at our farm before market, drive to market, be there on time, set up solo (you will be trained!), represent our farm well, come back to the farm, unload, go home!
-Be willing to drive up to 1 hour to market from our farm, depending on the market
-Be willing to work an 8-10 hour day
-Be able to lift around 60-70 lbs
-Thrive in a fast-paced environment–markets are fun and exciting, but can get busy depending on the market!
-Have consistent transportation. Ability to drive own vehicle to markets is a plus (and will be compensated).
-Be willing to learn! Customers often have many questions so you will need to learn about our practices and products.

If this sounds like you, please email a cover letter detailing your interest and qualifications! We look forward to meeting you.

…here we go!

Each year this day comes and I never feel ready. How is winter over so soon? Because I’m pretty sure we just ended chicken season 3 weeks ago.

Winter is a double edged sword for us. Yes, we’re looking forward to seeing green again. Yes, the cold, snow, and ice get to us. Yes, we’re frighteningly translucent and can’t wait for some vitamin d in our lives again.

And, at the same time, for us winter is like catching your breath after sprinting a mile. Like a cold beer after an 8-hour day in the heat of summer. Like the full night of sleep so desperately needed when you’ve been burning the candle at both ends.

But we’ll readjust. In a few short weeks we’ll move birds out on pasture and everything will feel right on the farm again. It’ll be alive with grass growing and bees buzzing and leaves popping and sheep grazing and this brief recharge will be a distant memory.

Who’s ready for fresh chicken in 2 months?
