Watching the snow right now isn't the perfect back drop to be thinking about Beekeeping but Beekeeping makes me happy. I'm headed out to start the outside decorations & that will keep me distracted for a bit. But I'll be dreamin of bees tonite!

Winter is long so come take a Beginner Class with me! I love it when people ask questions & interact in class. I don't get all science-cy & serious. I enjoy Beekeeping too much & I want you to enjoy it too. There's ALOT to learn, why not make it "bee" something that's a happy time!

VPIRG has been working with several beekeeping groups to organize this lobbying event and appreciates all the beekeepers’ interest in attending the Swarm the Statehouse event to help advance the H. 706 anti-neonicotinoids bill. We hope that all the attention will push it successfully out of committee and to the Senate. More information about the Protect Our Pollinators Coalition can be found here. If attending, make your way to the Cedar Creek Room by 10:30 AM. A press conference will then start promptly at 11:00. The Cedar Creek Room is 2nd floor, room F on this map. (Please get back to Anna Suberling, [email protected] with a few sentences for their press release offering support of H.706 and/or concern for pollinator decline.)

"This is a great chance for all those who are concerned about pollinators and the overuse of toxic neonic pesticides in Vermont to "swarm" the State House and make their voices heard. It's time to create some positive buzz around H.706, which is the bill to phaseout the use of 80-90% of all neonics in the state. The bill could get a vote in the key House Committee on Agriculture, Forestry, and Food Services very soon. So, now's the time to talk with your Reps and tell them why you care about bees, birds, and other pollinators!"

Bees & Hives to put them in! Ramping up the wood shop & getting ready for Spring! We don't have a monster warehouse. Don't want one. I want to stay small-ish. But we have what you need. No employees. I do the shipping & ordering. I answer the phone & visit with my customers. Some have become good friends over the years. I teach groups of people who are curious & want to try Beekeeping. I like doing everything for my business. Guess that makes me selfish......or crazy! I'm by no means an expert but I do love Bees. I hope you'll begin your journey here!

Wet, cold & just generally cruddy weather out there. But there's always a project! I'll finish my supply inventory today & get the booklets ready for the Beginner classes. It's always exciting to get ready for New Beekeepers! This season, my Workshops in the Bee Yards will be way more hands on & I think it will make for more confident first year Beekeepers.
Tomorrow is the first in person Vermont Beekeepers Association winter meeting since before COVID. It will be good to see faces of folks I haven't seen for awhile. If you're a Beekeeper, I encourage you to join the VBA & come to the meeting! If you're not a member, you can still register & get your membership when you get there. Hopefully, the weather will be good for travel.

Very happy that the temperatures will start rising this week! The girls need a cleansing flight! And, with any luck, the warmer temps will give us an opportunity to check their winter stores. Have your winter patties & fondant or sugar cakes with you so you can get the food on in one trip. Today, I'm going to test a couple of candy recipes for my Valentine Gift baskets. Chocolate covered Honey Comb, Honey Lavender and Rose & Honey Truffles and Peanut Butter Bees! And candles of course!

Beautiful blue sky & cold as a well digger's posterior! Hunker down bees. Temps will rise this week so maybe we'll have a chance to check the hives. Winter Pollen Patties & Fondant Cakes help get them thru. If you are able to check your hives & find the worst, try not to despair. Just like the bees, beekeepers have so many hurdles when it comes to winter hive survival. Take a deep breath, straighten your shoulders & push on. A successful beekeeper is one than continues to learn, work hard and TRY!
