Peach Creek Poultry

Peach Creek Poultry Peach Creek Poultry is a mom & pop, organic poultry farm located in the Sam Houston National Forest, owned and operated by Kurt and Betty Sonntag. VERY LOCAL.

We are totally mom and pop. It is just Betty and I doing the complete process, here outside of Willis Texas in the Sam Houston National Forest. Our feed is sourced from outside of Waco Texas from a small mom and pop farm, and our baby chicks come from a local farm in Cameron Texas. Everything is as close to Houston as you can get. "Our chickens are able to live a more natural and happy life"

We

raise the chicks, process them and deliver them. We handle each bird every day from the day they arrive to the day we deliver to you. They are processed by hand, with no machinery except a plucker. That's too difficult to do by hand! Our permit only allows for 10,000 birds a year (192 chickens a week approximately). Sanderson Farms and their subsidiaries in Bryan College Station has 2 processing plants and each plant is capable of doing over 1,000,000 birds a week. They do not grow them so you have no idea what they are made of. Our Process is very labor intensive. We feed and water by hand twice a day, which makes the chicks run and get exercise. When a run is empty, we till the pen and return the chicken waste to the ground to decompose. Then we take the organic chicken scratch and till it into the ground. This mix of barley, wheat, sorghum, sunflowers, corn, and millet grows for 2-4 weeks before the new chicks are let out to run in the grass; eat the grass and crickets, and grasshoppers. This gives them extra nutrients that aren't available in just vegetarian feed alone. They also get to act like chickens. With all the extra space; they get to run in, and play in the dirt like chickens are supposed to do. Most of their life is spent outside in the fresh air and sunshine. Our pens provide 8-10 square feet per bird; unlike the large farms that are required by law to have only 1.6 square feet per bird. Our layers have approximately 110 square feet per bird to run around in. At night, there is no light left on for them so they get a real day and night cycle, unlike factory raised birds, which are raised in the dark. This produces fewer stress hormones and they are able to live a more natural and happy life. The chickens feed tests are better than organic standards. They have less than 3% GMO material. It contains no antibiotics or steroids. Organic labels allow certain types and levels of both. Our supplier also tests for glyphosate which organic standards do not require. When our chickens are processed, we air chill them to REDUCE moisture and body weight. Chicken in the store has up to 15% saline solutions pumped into it so you are buying 15% salt water. All processing is by hand so each bird is visually inspected inside and out by us. We do the packaging and weighing by hand on a Department of Agriculture Certified digital scale.

Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow at the Memorial Villages Farmers Market!
We are still recovering from the supply issues during Hurricane Beryl, so chicken supply is limited! But we have plenty of eggs, and of course Kurt’s grill menu!

Another step and I would be knee deep! We had scraped out the runs and were waiting to fill with new sand when this recent round of storms came through. High winds downed trees, took out power, broke a few 4x4 posts that hold up the netting, and flooded the chicken runs. At least it wasn’t dark when we set up the generator!
We still plan to be cooking at the Memorial Villages Farmer’s Market tomorrow, so come on out and get a breakfast taco or sandwich! At the moment we don’t know if we will have any chicken available. It all depends on when the power is restored.

Peach Creek Poultry will not be present for the Memorial Villages Farmers Market tomorrow. We have been without power for two days, and therefore unable to butcher chicken. And given the conditions on our road, with the additional rain we are now getting, we won’t be crossing this creek in the dark! But it won’t be a day of rest! Now that we have power we can start the massive cleanup operation in the chicken runs. Rain or shine, farm chores must be done!

Today is Biscuit and Sausage Gravy day! Come see us at the Memorial Villages Farmers Market.

For All of our Peach Creek Poultry followers and customers:
Fall is upon us, and as most of you know, it is only the two of us here working the farm. Not only is it Turkey Season (still available for pre-order), it is time to winterize the farm and prepare for whatever that may bring. So, due to time constraints , we will be reducing the volume of chicken that is cut up into those delicious boneless breasts and ground chicken. We will primarily offer only whole chicken, whole chicken cut into quarters, and a limited supply of bone-in-breast, leg quarters, and wings. We hope to resume normal butchering practices after the holidays, if not sooner. We thank you for your patience and understanding and support of Peach Creek Poultry.

For all of our Montgomery Farmers Market followers and customers::
We reluctantly announce that we will no longer be participating in the Montgomery Farmers Market. Given fall time constraints (turkey season and winterizing the farm), and staffing issues, we feel it would be unfair to the market and our customers to be a “hit and miss” vendor. We will still be processing chicken. It will be available for purchase through our retail outlets. Please visit Granary health food stores in Conroe and Huntsville, Twisted T Farm Store in Willis, and T-N-T Meats in New Waverly. Thank you for your support.

We are excited to have Lance available to represent us at the Montgomer Farmers Market on Saturday! He will have fresh whole chicken, some boneless breast, wings, and leg quarters. And some ground chicken, soup bone packs, livers, gizzards, and hearts. So come early and get some chicken for your Labor Day cookout!

It has been brutally hot, as you all know!! Chicken don’t sweat, so it is challenging to raise them in a natural, outdoor setting. We do our best, and are bringing what we can to our markets today. Come out early, before it gets too hot, and visit Lance at the Montgomery market, or Kurt and I at the Memorial Villages market. Chicken and eggs are available at both locations.
