Kathryn’s Journal: AN-11 Grand Canyon

Just WOW! I knew it was big and would make my heart palpitate! Pictures I’ve seen may have better resolutions and settings, but none of them touched my entire being like seeing it in person♥️. How amazing it would be to just stake out a viewing position and photograph the same view through an entire day, watching shapes and shadows morph! This is another beautiful place in God’s Creation that I never dreamed I’d see in person and am so grateful.
I’ve loved seeing this wide land where so many Native peoples have lived for centuries. As well, I’ve really enjoyed meeting some of these people and learning more about their art and symbolism. While in a trading post in Cameron-on the eastern side of the GrandCanyon- I was learning from one of the salesmen, a Hopi clansman, who told me about the symbol on a lovely turquoise set. It is the Hopi symbol for friendship, derived from the common greeting shown in the photo below. He was delighted that I was so interested in the meanings and very willing to be photographed.
Always hoping to capture critters with my camera, there were many common small birds in the Canyon walls and , of course, the vultures were soaring on the wind currents, but no glimpses of large raptors. But I saw more lizards and did manage to walk near a Gopher snake when we were at Wupatki National Monument- a well preserved Pueblo ruin.
It was a grand day of seeing big things. Looking forward to more….

Kathryn’s Journal: 1/15/25 South Florida

We packed our lunch and headed toward the Keys … skirting the western edge of the cities and into amazing cropland. It’s really amazing to see a field of dozens of acres planted in perfect rows of perfectly exact tomato plants next to another dozens of acres of cherry tomatoes! We will be going through here again tomorrow and I want to stop for better pictures ..there is a crop that is a short bush that has white bags. I assume fruit is individually covered, but which fruit? Perhaps avocado? My photo at 50MPH didn’t help .
We stopped at a couple of state parks, hoping to see manatees in nature, and did actually see a manatee tail just as it was diving down…some frequent area snorkelers confirmed this and said that there were dolphins in that same area just a few hours previously.
After a drive through part of Everglades NP without much excitement, we headed back north and by accident ended up stuck in ugly traffic through the middle of Miami…the roads were very congested……so were the power lines! However, there were fun sights to see along the way. Adorable pastel condos just finished building, many different types of palm trees, and coconut palms, and high rises with gardens dripping over the tops. Beneath part of the elevated commuter train was a walking park where the big cement support columns were made to look like giant dominos. That along with sound baffles on highways and bridge columns that are formed with natural elements as art in them are the functional kind of art that I do enjoy seeing. God certainly has provided a wide variety of beautiful sights and I’m looking forward to spotting more of them as…
….our adventure continues ♥️
