Winter tip:

When out feeding cattle it has always been hard to not “help them out” by wiping the snow off their backs.

DO NOT DO THIS. You see them with the snow there and think they must be cold but it’s actually a really good sign. When there is snow on a cow’s back it means they are retaining their body heat and when you wipe it off you are ending that thermal layer, the snow that is left will melt and make the cow wet. Once they are wet they then get cold.

LEAVE THE SNOW ON THEM.

Have your chickens slowed down on laying?

Ours have not, we have averaged 8 eggs a day on 10 hens.

Why do chickens slow down on laying?
-light: most people believe it is the shorter days and that is partially true, BUT

-FEED is the main thing. When days get shorter and also colder chickens spend more time on the roost and have less time to eat while their bodies also require more energy to stay warm. When the chickens have to decide between egg production and warmth they pick warmth.

Make sure you try our chicken feed that is very high in energy and allows your hens to require less food and lay more through the winter!
