Dale and Gloria are retired teachers living "THE GOOD LIFE" on their little peace of heaven on earth.

They love gardening, harvesting, and preserving their bounty. Gloria especially loves making and selling her homemade jellies and jams made from local fruits (apple, pear, strawberry, blackberry, elderberry, wild plum, red grape, concord grape.) These past couple of years have found Dale and Gloria harvesting local medicinal plants and creating homemade salves and ointments from them which are available to the public. They've also tried their hand (quite successfully) at making homemade apple cider vinegar as well as pineapple vinegar, and they make their own vanilla--all waiting for YOU to try! You've heard the old saying that there is no rest for the wicked and the righteous don't need any???? BAH HUMBUG on that old adage!!!! I know I'm not 'wicked' as I've been washed in the blood of JESUS and clothed in HIS righteousness...........but I certainly could use the REST! :D Seems like there aren't enough hours in my day to accomplish all I want to get done. :/ Time manages to slip right through my fingers whether I want it to or now. BOO!

It was another very busy week here on the Honey-Do Farm preparing for Farmers Market on Saturday as well as being a vendor at Elk Creek Market (also on Saturday!) How did we split ourselves in half and do both??? Dale did Farmers Market (he just sold veggies) and I did Elk Creek. We had a great turnout at both places. He came home with just a few leftover zucchinis and gold bar squash and a few red and yellow onions. YIPPEE!!! I don't have to work up a lot of produce to keep it from going bad! :D I came home with less stuff than I took which is ALWAYS good! :D

We got our 23 meat turkeys moved to their new digs.....the newly renovated TURKEY/CHICKEN PEN! :D They are in hog heaven!! It's so entertaining to watch them run and fly, munch on the green grass, holler at ya with their PEEP PEEP PEEPS. I absolutely LOVE TKs!!! They have such great personalities.......believe it or not!

Our little piglets, Piggly-Wiggle and Boss Hog, are growing like weeds! They're so spoiled by our neighbors who send us their leftover milk (she takes the cream off for butter and doesn't need the rest of the milk) that when Dale shows up WITHOUT milk, they give him the stink-eye! :D Dale has had to make sure they had lots of water in their water trough as well as their wallow as it's been so hot and humid and wallowing is the only way that pigs can keep cool. To be honest, these past couple of days, I'm thinking they have the right idea! haha

Dale has everything he needs to fix his tractor, so he's hoping to get that done on Monday. I sure hope so!!!!; the last BIG storm we had blow through split my peach tree in half, and we've had NO WAY to move it.........and it's right up against the elderberry bushes! NOT FUN trying to get my RIPE elderberry heads while wading through peach tree limbs! BLAH!!!!! Speaking of elderberries, our bushes were LOADED this year! I already have a 2- gallon bag and another 1 gallon bag FULL of berries that I'll be working up once it cools down a bit. I'm always excited when I can harvest things that are good for ya from our little piece of heaven on earth. ;) God is SOOO good to us!!!!

OH WHAT A WEEK, and we still have two days left!!! Started off with us having to 'rescue' our 23 turkey poults. We got over 3 1/2" of rain at our place!! We knew the rain was coming (we were supposed to get 1/2 an inch!!!), so we covered the little TKs' crates with a large tarp to keep them dry. Well, the tarp did its job and kept the rain off them, BUT......where we had the crates was a pretty level spot in our yard (which meant it was LOWER than the surrounding mini-hills).............which meant all the water had to go somewhere.........and it did! Right into the TKs' crates. UGH! So, while Dale and Leah were in the pouring rain trying to capture 23 TKs, I was in the 'junk' room preparing a couple of safe, dry places for them. We had a huge box that held about 15 of the TKs and a large storage crate that held the others. I had to put down pine chips, find a waterer for each temporary shelter, AND try to rig up a heat lamp over each to help the poor birds dry. THANK GOD, all 23 survived!!! Dale and I moved the crates to a higher, drier spot the next morning, then we returned the TKs to their new surroundings.....they were ELATED to be able to run, flap their wings, and act like...........well, TURKEYS! :D If all goes well, we'll be transitioning them to the BIG turkey pen where they'll have LOTS more room!
Yesterday, Dale, Leah, and I separated the cows and calves (which should have been done months earlier but our fencing wasn't finished on the new pasture area). ANYWAY....all went smoothly until just about dark. We had gone outside to lock up our chickies and check on the TKs when Dale heard one of the steers mooing his head off. Silly fella was trying to get to his momma, who was in the BACK pasture (he was in the front one), by going THROUGH the fence onto our neighbors property. After trying to get him back through the fence onto our pasture, trying to chase him down the hill along the fence line so he'd be on our property, Dale just gave up. We were all three hot, tired, and frustrated!!! This morning, Leah calls to tell us that our wondering steer had gotten back through the fence into his own pasture all the while continuing to moo his silly head off. :/
On top of everything else, our sweet LGD puppy, Ellie, decided that she'd chew THROUGH the magnetic screen I put up every summer to keep bugs and chickens off the back porch. I was NOT a happy camper!! I had some old panels from past screens, and I did a quick "Ozark Engineering" which took her exactly ONE night to destroy.....oh how quickly we forget how destructive puppies can be!! But we love her, and have to believe that "this too, shall pass". Ahhhhhh.....the joys of FARM LIFE! :D Wouldn't trade it for any other way of life~ :)

WE SURVIVED!!! These past few days have been brutal.....the HOTTEST temps we've experience this year on our little piece of heaven on earth..........and BOY, were they ROUGH on these two old people. But chores had to be done, errands run, and animals tended to.......I'm not sure how many shirts a day that Dale managed to sweat through, but when I hung out my wash today, it looked like we have a dozen fellas living with us. :/
Last Wednesday, our little TKs arrived!!! I LOVE TKs!!! These little ones were so very tiny, and I cannot believe how much they've grown in just a week! I do hope they keep growing as we intend to process them the end of October. Nothing tastes better than home-grown, home-processed turkey meat!! We usually raise turkeys every other year interchanging them with meat chickens. This year, we've had to raise meat chickens, pigs, AND turkeys. We weren't able to find any TKs last year. I remember why we stagger them now. hahaha
We also added an new little gal to our farm family, Ellie Bug. She is a 3 month old, full blood Pyrenees . We lost our Shadow, our male pyr, last winter, and we've sorely missed having another LGD to help our Gabi keep all our animals safe. We're hoping that our precious Ellie will bond with the animals once she's been with us long enough to 'explore' the farm. For right now, she's being expose to the chickens and the cats........who don't seem to notice her at all! :D In a couple of weeks, Dale will introduce her to the pigs, then a little later on, she'll meet the cows. We're wanting her to stay close to the house for now until she gets used to living with us. I wish y'all could feel how SOFT her fur is!!! OH MY GOSH!!! We are so in love with this sweet gal, and she seems pretty happy with us, the chickens, the cats, our Gabi Girl and her two brothers--Shadrach and Meshach. :)

WOW! We've been so busy that there's been very little time to update y'all on what's going on here at Honey-Do Farm. First, Dale got all his hay hauled to the house with the help of a kiddo who's pretty special to us. They managed to beat the rain!!! HOOT HOOT.
Second, Dale's tractor has been in for repair for the past 3 weeks, so that means he's running behind on all chores that require the use of a tractor. BOO!
Third, Boss Hog and Piggly Wiggly are growing like weeds and getting used to Dale......somewhat. They aren't sure if they trust him completely or not. :D
Fourth, we've been canning and canning and canning. When it rains, it pours! Peaches, green beans, pickled beets, bread and butter pickles, pickled eggs have been processed and now set in the pantry for us to use this winter; raspberries have been cooked down, juiced and are in the freezer where they'll stay until cooler weather. Then, they'll magically turn into JELLY! :D YUM! We have about 1/2 bushel of onions in the dehydrator, and once they're completely dried, we'll vacuum seal them in 1/4 pt jars to use on pizzas, in soups, in meatloaf, etc. Can't beat home-grown onions. About 1/2 bushel of gold bar squash has been shredded, measured out, and put into freezer bags so I can fix Dale his beloved squash patties this winter. In our spare time, we processed 30 meat chickens, got them cut up, bagged up, and put in the freezer. Leah was such a blessing to us as she pitched in and helped her aging parents. ;)
Fifth, Dale's Toro lawn mower decided if the tractor were going to take a break, it would as well. UGH!!! Now our grass is so high that we're thinking about having someone cut and BALE IT! :D He had to order the part that was causing all the mischief, and we got it yesterday. I'd say HOOT HOOT, but it was the WRONG PART! DOUBLE UGH~~ So now he has to order the correct part, but he can't until Monday. If we had electric fencing, I'd have him bring down the cows! hahaha
After reading all this, you should feel really great about your life! chuckle chuckle Even with everything falling apart (including us two old peoples), God is still good. He is still in control; and He still deserves all our praise and glory! We thank HIM every day for our little piece of heaven on earth, our way of life, our physical ability to continue to be as self-sufficient as possible. We may not get as much done in a day as we used to get accomplished, but we eventually get r done. ;) Y'all stay COOL as August is swiftly approaching.....................can you believe it??????????????

Well folks.....chickens are processed and in the freezer...........green beans are canned and in the pantry............and now to get around to doing what has been 'neglected' since accomplishing the above mentioned chores. :/ Oh well, I guess that's what happens when ya get older and slower, when hubby's tractor is in the 'hospital' getting fixed, when the mower blades need to be replaced on the Toro, and when it's so hot ya can't stand it! ;)
On a side note, our two momma hens are tending their little ones exceptionally well (for which we're thankful). Leah's momma hen, who is still at our house in the 'nursery', enjoys being out and about with her little ones; but hopefully, they'll get to go home tonight. I will miss seeing their little fluffy bodies zooming around through the tall grass. But they need to get acclimated to their permanent home. Besides, Dale thinks we have another hen going broodie, and we're gonna need the nursery back! :D
All in all, God is still good; HE is still in control; and we two old folks still have a bit more 'go' in us, so how can we complain??? We're certainly enjoying our laid-back country life even with all it's challenges!!!! Wouldn't trade it for all the $$$ in the world~ THANK YOU, LORD, for ordering our steps to our little piece of heaven on earth over 26 years ago. What a great Savior we serve! :)

HOT! HOT! HOT~ (and I'm not talkin' about my hunka hunka hubby. wink wink 😃) I think TEXAS sent us their weather......HOT, HUMID, and utterly miserable! I'm usually a 'hot weather' person, but y'all, I'm about to have to change my t-shirt due to the fact that I've been canning green beans and my shirt is SOAKED due to my sweating. If you know me, you KNOW I seldom "sweat". But today....yeah, it's got me ROASTING! BUT....I did get half my green beans canned up. Just waiting for the pressure canner to cool down so I can get this batch out and start my last batch........UGH! NOT looking forward to that chore, but it's gotta be done!
If anyone wants to volunteer, we're processing our meat chickies tomorrow! 😃 I told Dale that I'm NOT a morning person, but we're getting up at the crack of dawn to get these birds processed and on ice before the temp and humidity zoom up to "unbearable"....which is usually about 9 to 10 o'clock. LORD HAVE MERCY ON US WORKIN' FOLKS!
I'll also be working up some peaches should anyone wanna volunteer to help with those! 😃 THEN, I'm dry canning some taters! One thing's for sure, I should stay out of trouble for the next week, huh? 😃 Nah............probably not. We had two new members join us on Honey-Do Farm! Today, we picked up "Boss Hog" and "Piggly-Wiggly"! Any guesses on what they are! hahaha Every other year, we try to raise a couple of pigs feeding them non-gmo feed, allowing them plenty of space to root around, letting them feast on all the acorns that fall off all the oaks we have around the HUGE pen, and occasionally getting a few 'goodies' from leftover veggie and fruit processing marathons. Shouldn't take them too long to put on enough weight so we can 'enjoy' their being in the freezer instead of a slightly smelly pig pen. :D

We're also processing our meaties this coming Friday. Any volunteers wanna come and help? :D Don't everyone raise their hands at once. :D Come the middle of July, we're expecting our TKs poults to arrive; ya know what THAT means. These two old people will be BUSY!! But we love it, and we appreciate the good Lord giving us the physical strength and know-how to do all the things we're still able to do. We give HIM thanks~~

After this past week of humidity so high ya could barely breathe, getting DUMPED on with rain/wind/storms, today is so NICE!!! The temps are low, the humidity is low, and we've had no rain here at Honey Do Farm. I heard they got a flood south of us, but all we had were some clouds. GOD IS GOOD! :D I do thank HIM for the reprieve we're getting from the heat and humidity! For a couple of days, I thought we were back in TEXAS.........or worse, FLORIDA! YIKES! :D

I've been ATTEMPTING to clean out and organize the JUNK ROOM/plant room/storage room/catchall room the past couple of days.............BLAH...UGH....and UGH again!!!! I'm making progress in getting it organized.....kinda. But I can't really complain; it's been 'collecting' stuff for the past 20+ years........BUT...........while I was cleaning off a small portion of the top rack that Dale build me that extends the entire length of the room, I found THIS fella. Not gonna lie....it gave my old heart a START! If you look close, you can see that he bit off more than he could chew! 😃 Yes, the snake was trying to swallow a mouse that was too big to be swallowed, but he died trying! 😃

OH MY GOODNESS! Time has been ZOOMING by so quickly here on our little piece of heaven! With foraging, harvesting, drying, crushing and packaging all the medicinal plants we use for our medicinal teas; foraging, harvesting, infusing medicinal plants for our salves, we hardly have time to do anything else. (Ya have to strike while the iron is hot!) Some of these plants only last a month or so--purple dead nettle and Heal All for examples. Because we forage on our property (we don't spray), Dale isn't allowed to mow our lawn until all our precious 'weeds' are either gathered or gone to seed. With all the rain, OUR YARD LOOKS LIKE A PASTURE! hahaha But that's okay with us! He may have to have the neighbor cut it for hay! hahaha
Any of our followers who would like any of our teas or salves, send me a pm with your address and we'll ship ya some....OR stop by any Saturday morning from 9-1 at Willow Springs Farmers Market. The teas are $10 for a container of tea, a muslin tea bag, and a scoop to measure the amount of dried leaves ya need.....oh, AND an information sheet with all the benefits our teas offer. You can use the tea leaves and muslin bag more than once, so SAVE THOSE LEAVES! We have Mullein (DA BEST), goldenrod, plantain, purple dead nettle, bee balm, and turkeytail mushroom. Each one has unique health benefits, and we actually use these ourselves. We can attest that they DO WORK! ;)
We have several salves as well that are $5 for a 2oz container--plantain (excellent for soothing 'itches'), purple dead nettle, bee balm, dandelion, goldenrod, Heal all. All salves are made with our own bees wax!! AND............we use all these as well. :)
