Piglet & puppy party! We went to a neighborhood block party to celebrate grandkids being in town. It's so fun to see the joy that baby animals bring to kids and how seeing them happy brings joy to the grandparents.

Life update because I haven't posted here for a loooong time and plan to start posting here again more. If you are unaware we moved to Alaska last year. We have been here almost a year! Which is crazy to think its only been a year because so much has happened. We bought property, then bought a house while Corey was still working in WA and now trying to start Corey's business up here and still raising pigs and kids. But now that we are getting our feet on the ground we have added chickens, goats and had a suprise litter of puppies. Life has been busy to say the least but I'm so excited to finally settle into our own home and our own little farm up here in Alaska.

Have you ever harvested rasberry leaf for tea?

The kids and I just dehydrated a bunch of leaves for tea prompted by my nesting and labor prep. Rasberry leaf tea is commonly used to tone your uterus and contains B vitamins, vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, zinc and iron. 🙌 The conditions are perfect for harvesting in the PNW right now too! You want small new leaves as your bush is starting to bud but not flowering. I had never even thought to harvest the leaves for tea but now my mind is spinning with all the possibilities!

I think we have a roo on our hands. We had one rooster that we inherited before at our last house who was nice at the beginning but ended up being really mean. If you raise one from a chick does that up your chance of them being good with kids? I heard that it could just be breeding genetics too. Or is it luck simply of the draw? I'm really hoping he is a good one 🤞

Just picked up our half hog for our family from the butcher! Can't wait to cook up some homegrown pork!

When growing livestock for food there is much more love and appreciation that comes from it. You don't waste and you are more grateful. You know that it cost a life, you knew that life, and you bonded with it. You gave them the best life because you actually care about your livestock but also for your family and the quality of meat you will feed them. Nothing in this life is free and I think our society can be too far removed to see the actual cost it takes to put food on the table.

If you have never stopped by our website go over to www.fatandroundranch.com to check it out. I am currently working on a newsletter that I'm hoping to get out sometime next week. That being a loose timeframe because life seems to always have different plans than I do in my head. It will just be about current farm updates a few things we have learned lately and why we have decided to change our direction a bit. Go subscribe and do so knowing you will only get an update probably once a quarter becuase that's a realistic goal I think as a wife, mom, homeschooling, and prior commitments will allow.

The butcher called today and told me they are able to butcher 2 extra hogs tomorrow! I put the request in and they didn't know if they had availablity for the extra ones but now they do! It's exciting because butchers are booked into 2023 right so you take what you can get. I have one whole hog unclaimed, either a whole or 2 halves available. This is a Kunekune so pig so they are smaller and contain more fat. Yum. Due to the smaller stature that makes it less weight, less money, less freezer space and a great start for someone who hasn't bought bulk meat before from a local farm.

After lots of time and hard work we have finally come to our first harvest. I'm so excited to literally be able to eat the fruit of our labor and be able to offer our community the opportunity to support us in farming. Corey and I have a strong belief in quality and that starts from what we feed our pigs to the lifestyle they live so we can honestly say we have given these animals the best life we can offer. That can make things challenging in this industrious cycle of big agriculture and but so rewarding at the end.
