Joan is due Friday, but she's been nesting pretty seriously today, only coming out if I brought feed. Her teats were really full this morning, going down throughout the day. I decided it was time to get her moved and settled in her farrowing pen. I should have taken video. She is all about going into the maternity ward and high tailed it straight to her spot. I don't know if it's because of the extra attention she receives or if she knows this means she's about to have babies again. This sow absolutely loves to be a mom. She's our last to farrow until February. I'm determined to get our new farrowing pens built. If I would have known how brutal summer was going to be, I would have left the old ones up a bit longer.

It's a beautiful day and cabin fever was hitting Marge pretty hard. I let them out into a small area, but Marge insisted she go out on grass instead. The babies were a bit hesitant, but only for a second. Just as they started to venture out on the grass with mama, Marge decided everyone needed to go back in the house. Somebody PLEASE claim that spotted gilt! 😂😂😂 If I thought I was faster than that sow, I'd sn**ch her up and she'd be a backyard pet. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Enjoy, my sweet girl. You're about to go on lockdown.😉 You may wonder why we don't let our sows farrow on pasture. The answer is quite simple: deep wallows. We are limited on space and as such, there are big holes in just about every area, and those holes are currently flooded with piglet killing water. The girls don't seem to mind being penned for a bit. We treat them to extra TLC while they are on maternity duty. If it's dry, we generally give mom the opportunity to venture out to graze when the babies are about a week old. As wet as it is here, that may be extended a few extra days. We want our pigs free to do pig things, but not when it puts any animal's safety at risk.

Everybody is tickled pink about all of the blessed rain we have received.... everybody, that is, except the goats. They have a permanent look of disgust plastered across their faces. Poor dears can't possibly go out into the eyeball deep grass they have access to because, it's wet! 😩 So, much like ants in a flood, they cling to the highest branches and try to maintain life until the sun dries every drop of the wretched moisture. They are suffering irreparable harm to their mental health. 🙄

I know how some of you like to make fun of my voice, so here ya go! Sorry, not sorry. It's the voice that God & Texas gave me.😉 It's a little ragged now, thanks to two cervical fusions, but you know what? My pigs don't care. They come runnin' when they hear Mama call them. At least, Joan tried to run. Being less than a week out from farrowing, our big girl doesn't have much gas in the tank. Isn't she beautiful? 😍
