One of the best barrel racing lessons I ever took was not a barrel racing lesson at all.

It was a dressage lesson.

It taught me how to communicate with each part of the horse instead of trying to control the entire horse with my hands. I learned how to move the shoulders without losing the hips, control the rib cage, create bend without pulling and use my hands, legs and body together.

It also taught me that good hands are not simply quiet hands. They move with purpose, release at the right moment and become still when the horse finds the correct answer.

As barrel racers, we can become so focused on fixing the turn that we overlook what is happening underneath us. A lot of barrel problems are really body-control, balance or communication problems that begin long before we ever approach the barrel.

That dressage lesson did not change the discipline I loved. It made me a better rider within it.

Never become so loyal to one style of riding that you stop learning from another. The goal is not to prove your way is the only way the goal is to communicate with the horse more clearly.

If you are a youth 5-18 as of January 1st, we invite you to join the Reber Valley Riders 4-H Club! We generally meet 1-2x month. In the winter months we compete in 4-H Horse science events, and in the warmer months we have hands-on project meetings, 4-H events and educational field trips.

You must be enrolled in Essex County NY 4-H to participate in our club's activities.

If you would like to join our club but can’t make the October 5th meeting, just let us know and we’ll make sure you have a project book set up for you!

Happy Back to School!

We had an action packed August and so our Fall schedule is out late. Don't worry - most our 8 week sessions are starting next week on the 8th.

This week our 3:30 Wednesday Pony Patrol has 1 opening and our 5:30 Thursday Adult has one opening. Snag them while you can!

We also have The Saddle Gal visiting us this Saturday for fittings and consults. Contact us if you'd like to book an appointment with her - truck ins welcome!

For most horse owners, the barn is their happy place. The place they go to take a deep breath, spend some time with their horse, and catch up with their barn friends.

While the barn can act as an escape from day-to-day obligations and chores, it’s important to remember that there is a whole staff behind keeping the barn a clean, functional place so that you and your horse are able to spend time together and enjoy each other’s company.

While barn staff doesn’t expect riders and boarders to chip in on the big things, like blowing the aisle or dragging the arena, small things can add up, and are much appreciated! Take a look at our list of “little thing” that make all the difference.

Sweep Up After Your Horse: Did you pick your horse’s feet out in the aisle? What about if you clipped your horse and now there is hair everywhere? A quick sweep will clear the aisle and make work for staff a little easier.

Close The Gates: When you take your horse in from the paddock, make sure you close and secure the gate behind you. When gates aren’t secure they are more likely to break, which can be a costly expense for a barn owner.

Leave Things Where You Found Them: This applies not only to any items that you use around the barn, but also to any open or closed doors. Remember, there is always a reason for the way things are at the barn so yes, you have to put those scissors back in the same spot!

Make Sure You Put Your Things Away: Whether it’s tack, brushes, or your boots, make sure that you put away all of your items before leaving the barn.

Fold Your Blankets Neatly: There’s not much worse than stuffed blankets in front of a stall. Neatly fold your blankets and sheets before hanging on your horse’s stall. Don’t know how to fold a blanket? Just ask!

Turn The Lights Off: When you’re the last one leaving the barn or arena, make sure you shut the lights off. It’s also important to really make sure you need the lights on. If there’s natural light, maybe think twice! Electricity bills add up fast.

And For Goodness Sake…Pick Up Your Horse’s Manure!: …I don’t think we need an explanation for this one.

Next time you’re at the barn, keep this list in mind. Chances are that just by doing one of these “little things”, you will make your barn staff’s day!

Applications are officially OPEN for the 2026 NYS 4-H Equine Ambassadors Program.



This is completely FREE and not your average leadership program.



This is:

• connect directly with Cornell University

• traveling across the country with other horse kids

• networking with real equine industry professionals

• overnight leadership camps

• public speaking + resume building

• making lifelong friends and connections

• representing New York State in the horse industry

• becoming part of a statewide network that will support you long after high school



Last year, our inaugural cohort traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah for the American Youth Horse Council Symposium. This upcoming year, our Equine Ambassadors are heading to KENTUCKY for even more national-level equine experiences.



You do NOT need to ride.

You do NOT need to own a horse.

You just need passion, curiosity, leadership potential, and a willingness to grow.



This program is completely FREE thanks to the support of the Agriculture and New York State Horse Breeding Development Fund.
