💐What are we doing on the flower farm in June?

June is a transition month on the flower farm, as we say goodbye to the spring flowers. Here are some of the big things we’ll do in June:

🌸Weed, mulch, water, repeat! May was the driest May we’ve ever experienced, meaning weeding, mulching and watering are absolutely critical for keeping the plants happy and growing.

🌸Deadheading. One way you encourage flowers to put out more blooms is to cut them. I deadhead these violas today and they were too pretty to just throw away! Deadheading also encourages the plants to send out longer stem length, which is why I deadheaded the violas.

🌸Direct seeding. We have some flowers that will get sown every week or every 2-3 weeks, to help ensure a continuous harvest all summer. We direct through the middle of July!

🌸Flipping beds. This isn’t as dramatic as it sounds lol. As spring flowers fade, we rip them out and transplant or direct seed heat-loving summer annuals in those beds. For example, the butterfly ranunculus bed became zinnias and cosmos this week.

🌸Staking and netting. This is a chore, but some flowers that produce gorgeous blooms (dahlias, cosmos) get top heavy, so they need support. We stake and net the beds that need it once they’re mulched.

There are lots more tasks, but those are the big time investments we’ll make in June to ensure the field is blooming and beautiful for you all summer and fall! 💐🍂

The first event in the flower field is yoga on 6/14 with SoulMoon Studio - come join us!!

Why flowers? 🌸

One reason is that growing flowers reminds me to stop, pay attention, and appreciate simple things, like this first bucket of yarrow that we harvested today. My soul needs the frequent reminder that I don’t have to gun it towards the figurative top of the mountain at 150% all of the time; good things are all around me if I am willing to pause and see them. 🌸

Sadly, the peonies didn’t like the heat this week and shut down. 🙁 The farmstand will be closed this weekend. The peonies we stored will be at the Wilmington farmers’ market 6/18!
