Beware disturbing image... farming is the most rewarding joyful heartfelt accomplished thing and yet physical and mentally exhausting. Yesterday while my wife and I were working on upgrading our high tensile fence for the cows we heard a few cows blat. Stopped what we were doing to go check. They didn't sound too awful alarmed but wasn't exactly normal. We got in sight of the cows and they were all near the edge of our lawn no big deal. Some of the calves we could see were down by the stream were I had unrolled a round hay bale. They like to nap on what the cows don't eat. No big deal. Let's just ride up the fence line and check. We notice a young cow (not calf) laying on the hay flat out. Then I see the cow move and realized she was in labor. Get down the new mama and the calf is out half way stuck and the mom has nothing left to give. So I start pulling the stuck calf and then the wife helped boy was it stuck. Mama finally helped or we pulled hard enough. Calf came out along with what's In The photo.. she pr*****ed... Julie went home and got some towels. I called the vet. Sent photo to vet they said dr. Was in surgery and would call back in 30. We tried getting calf to nurse on mama still laying on her side didn't go well. Called my processor to check availability , he answered, he call right back after talking to his crew if he could respond. I called my dear mother "can you please go to Bennington to get colostrum and milk replacer. Mom on the way. Processor called back, I can leave now... I told him I wanted to talk to the vet before I made the decision. Mama cow stood up more came out like twice as much... she walked away from the calf went for the herd and then for water. Vet called back still waiting for doctor but yes she's prolapse we can push it back in don't let her walk get her locked up. Now we had a cow do this about 10 years ago. She didn't calf well after that. I had already grabbed the rifle and a knife. I called the processor back and asked him to come. Mama had layed back down. Felt like forever but mom got there with milk replacer and colostrum and we were able to harvest the mother. We got the calf to the barn in a trailer behind the 4 wheeler. She didn't eat amazingly but she ate. This morning 5am I went to the barn she damn near drank a full bottle!!! Calf name is Sweetie and she's one lucky calf!
