Roadrunner quenching his thirst in the birdbath today. We put out mealworms & larvae every day around 11:30, whistle a two-note whistle and wait for less than a minute before the birds come in for an easy snack. 9 times out of 10 it's a Black-crested Titmouse that makes it to the worms first. Then either Carolina Chickadee or Northern Cardinal. Either way, they have learned what the whistle means!

Chickens can be determined! My flock has a great coop with a large safe run and comfy nest boxes. But one of my Azurs, "Redwing", flies over the fence every day to lay her egg in the dense cover of a Passionvine thicket. Every day one of us has to go rescue her at 11:30, return her to the flock and collect her egg. We have clipped her wing, then wings, raised the fence height to at least 7', secured the bottom of the fence and she still makes it to her spot. More power to her!

The earth will pass between the sun and the full moon creating a partial lunar eclipse, when the moon appears reddish, visible across TX late Thursday, Aug. 27, into early Friday, Aug. 28. The eclipse will begin at 8:23 p.m. Thursday, noticeably darkening around 9:33 p.m. as Earth’s shadow moves across its surface. The best time to look up will be around 11:12 p.m., when the eclipse reaches its peak. At that point about 94% of the moon will be obscured by Earth’s shadow, leaving only a small portion brightly lit. Most of the eclipse will be over by 12:51 a.m. Friday, although its final stage will continue until about 2 a.m.
