It’s GARDEN TIME!

The garden is in full swing now. Teri, I, and a dedicated group of “Community Volunteers” have been working on putting the garden together for this year.

I pulled all of the plant starts out of my hot house and got them planted over the last two weeks. Many of the crops are now up and thriving and we are in the process of maintenance weeding and thinning. The soil is looking really good this year. I have been working on it for the last 5 years, and the results show the effort. We had to replant the bush beans, but that has been the only problem so far.

Teri’s contribution has been to make plant signs for everything in the garden. We just finished them today. We have names and a color code to differentiate all the plants for each other.

I started a few of the plants off early in some DIY Hoop Tunnels, this year, the results were good, but I don’t know if it was worth the effort. I think they will be better used to extend the season, later this year.

We replaced all the “plucker fingers” in my FEATHERMAN this year, as well as installing a new “ignitor” for the hot water bath. They both have made a difference in its operation.

We continue to track the fox that raided us last week. Got some good pictures, to confirm it was a fox and not a fisher, and hope to remedy the situation soon.

Just a short one today. I’ll get the garden photos out on the next posting. Until then…

Not a weekly update, but an update, nonetheless.

The farm has been blessed with a group of individuals that are interested in helping with the garden in exchange for training and a portion of the harvest. They have been doing a GREAT job and are continuing to expand their knowledge. We have already finished all the bed prep and gotten most of the garden structures up. The berries and grapes have also been weeded, pruned, and tied up. This next week, we will be starting our planting of seed and transplants. I’ll show more of that in the next update.

We have had some mixed results on our chickens and ducks. About a week ago, our resident fox got into the yard (in daylight) n dilled almost all of our egg-laying chickens (20+). We are actively gong after the fox now, to “move it along”. All of the meat birds made it through, and we have a number of laying chicks that are now going to be used for replacements.

Finished digging up the newest starts of elderberry (around 30) and have those out FOR SALE. Had a lot of interest last year; we will see what happens this year.

With the garden expansion this year, we have decided to make new plant signs to add to our existing markers. Teri has taken this project on and is diligently “at work”.

We did send 3 pigs off to be processed and had them split so we could portion them into “primals”. They take up a bit of freezer space, but the results are going to be FANTASTIC! We plan on having one of the halves for our “pig roast” in June.

More later.

Hello again…

For everyone that has thought we slipped off the edge of the earth... SURPRISE, we are still here. We have just been super busy and trying to do some catchup before Spring gets here.

Have gotten the garden tilled and staked out. And thanks to a wonderful bunch of volunteers, got the grapes weeded and the bean trellis’s up. We have garlic, chard, peas, turnips, beets, and rutabagas in the ground already. We hope to get the berries and elderberries weeded next week.

The weather has been very uncooperative these last few weeks, with temperatures going up and down, all the time. And the wind has been crazy! Sometimes it’s been so bad that we haven’t been able to work outside.

I have been getting all my seed starts going though; a benefit of having to stay inside more than usual. Mostly my peppers, tomatoes, kale, chard, and some leeks, to name a few. Will be starting my squash soon; and direct seeding my spinach. Still behind on my lettuces but catching up.

Farm activities have included making tamales with the grandkids, creating some new flavors of bacon (one of our Kunekunes), making blueberry syrup and filling from some berries left over from last season (had to make room in the freezer for a couple of pigs we had processed), and some Strawberry-Pineapple Jam (and boy did it turn out GOOD!). We also rendered a couple batches of lard from our last batch of pigs.

One of the most exciting happenings is…. We have a NEW FARM SIGN. The roughly 3-foot diameter farm sign is metal, features our Farm Logo, Farm Name and our Name. It was created by Shenandoah Metal Fabricators of Junction, WV, and we couldn’t be happier with the result. It is unique in that it has a 2-toned, brushed finish that makes the background look like wood.

Still working on lots of projects and will try and stay more current in the future. But, if you know me, I really can’t make that promise. Until next time ---

ATTENTION! ATTENTION!

Through no fault of her own, this little gilt is back on the market.

AKKPS 35963
DOB: 4/3/23
Wattles: 2
Teats: 7/7

She is a phenomenal pig; high on her pasterns, flat back, good broad chest and would make a good addition to either your meat breeders or conformation stock.

You can see more about her, and our other available stock at www.pilgrimsrestfarmva.com then "Breeding Stock For Sale"

PM if you have questions.

AKKPS 42188 This Jenny x Tuahuru Piglet, born 10/10/23, is ready for your farm - Wi******er, VA

This little gilt has it all. She is the fastest growing piglet we have, out of a litter of nine. She has a beautiful backline, double wattled, 6 x 6 even teats, good leg set, and a wonderful disposition. She gets along with all of her litter mates and loves “belly rubs” when the weather is warm.

See the link below for more information on her and the remaining breeder/meat pigs we have available. www.pilgrimsrestfarmva.com or PM me with questions or concerns.

Pig Lift Plans in SKETCHUP

Hey folks. With the coming of Spring, several of you have asked me to repost our plans for our Pig Lift.

These are our original plans that have been around since June of 2022, and have been modified to include full access for your vet as well as all the normal features you would expect from the lift. Add a few control panels to direct your stock, and you have a complete system.

These plans are COMPLETLY FREE and can be used and shared as you want. All we ask is that you share the link and any modifications you may have, so everyone benefits.

Building your own, with materials that can be picked up from your local metal supplier, is not only cheaper (by a factor of 3), but allows you to choose your material to fit your operation, and saves you freight costs.

The link below will open a DROPBOX file that has all the files and sketches you will need to construct your own Pig Lift. These plans were originally created to have the Pig Lift secured in place, but with the insertion of outriggers and wheels, it can be made portable. Several of the folks have done that already, with great results. Make sure you download and read the Pig Lift Notes document file, as it has information you will need. The cut lists are color coded and pretty much self explanatory, and will help you with ordering your material.

As always, should you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to contact me, and I will get back to you as soon as I am able.

Welcome to a very WINDY Pilgrims Rest Farm!

The weather has changed, and we are back to some warm temperatures here on the farm. That’s good in that I can work on the garden and prepare for winter; and it’s bad in that I have to finish the garden and prep for winter RIGHT NOW!

Water hoses are in, tarps are coming down and most of the garden is put away. All we have left is the winter squash, which are hardening on pallets outside. They will be put away soon.
Pursuing my seed saving in earnest now. Have seeds spread all over the place drying and aging. Tomatoes are done, most of the peppers, squashes, cucumbers, and beans. The rest of the crops will get new seed next year, as part of my rotation. We finished the last two pig houses and have them in the newly expanded boar/barrow field. With the colder night temperatures, the boys started using them right away.

For those of you who are following our DOWNSIZING endeavor, we have all of the Breeding quality and Meat pigs out on the web page now (pilgrimsrestfarmva.com). Just open the page, go to the top menu and select Our KuneKunes, and pull down the two subcategories. We will continue to update the site as we have changes. For those of you who are interested in Meat pigs, this may be a golden opportunity. Stop by and take a look, if you have the time.

Going to keep this brief today, so…
