Kit count 😁 all present.

There was a hawk in the area today, but even if it was brazen enough to hunt right up against the house, the babies have lots of tunnels to duck into.

Hopefully what I saw the hawk snacking on was one of the voles or groundhogs that are tearing up the ground.

What’s the best way to store sweet potatoes?

I try to cure them for a few days outside, in shade. This year curing was cut short but 1 day is better than none.

I box them to limit light exposure. Used to try to keep them in a single layer, not touching, but I don’t have space for everything that way. So they just go in shallow boxes now, on a shelf in the basement (60-65f year round, dark room, and we run a dehumidifier to keep humidity below about 55%).

I’ll pull them out and remove anything that has mold or soft spots in a month or so. Then I’ll check them all mid winter. Otherwise I just forget about them, besides pulling a few to eat now and then.

They don’t usually try to sprout in the boxes until summertime, so I bring some out to grow shoots in April.

Last time I bought sweet potatoes was 5 years ago. And that was just because the first round i bought had white flesh. 🤷‍♀️ oops. They were delicious, stored fantastically, and grew easily, but I like my sweet potatoes orange 😁

Kits made their targets with a few ounces extra - aiming for 1 lb by 3 weeks, at 22 days these were 18.5 to 20.5 oz. 🎉

Half of the sweet potatoes I planted this year were from these old potatoes. Unfortunately, since I had help harvesting and was rushing to dig while paying more attention to avoiding small hands than to what was coming out of each side of the row 😆

Still, the old shoots did produce and I have a comparable harvest compared to other years. I won’t repeat the experiment on purpose, but it’s good to know that you can potentially skip a year and still plant sweet potatoes from potatoes collected the previous season 😁

I have a table on the deck that I spread sweet potatoes on to cure but it only ever holds about half the harvest. My daughter saw this at a garage sale and picked it up for me…

I have yet to actually sit on it but hey, it has now served a really important purpose 😆
