Not today, hornworm 🤣 I didn’t plant tomatoes this year, just a few volunteer cherry tomato plants. The hornworm will try to eat the peppers, too, and I’ve even found one nibbling on a Serrano once. I’m not concerned enough to go hunting, so thank you to the parasitic wasps for helping out 🥰

Here’s our OG rabbit, Lyra. She’s been a great mom, produced some excellent, fast growing kits, and while she has smaller litters she’s been great about nursing overflow when the other girls have more kits than they can keep fed.

As our first, there were mistakes… tried TS feed for the first month or so and probably stunted her growth. I think she’s close to 9 lbs though. And we went too long between breedings which may have led to smaller and smaller litters she’s had. Past couple of tries, she’s delivered 3, then 2, then 1.

I let her best doe go to another breeder, thinking there would certainly be another. We did get another doe, but not a George & Lyra doe 😭 Still trying for one more. Last attempt didn’t take but it was a month ago and George may have been too heat stressed.

Paired the two again yesterday. Here’s hoping for one more George & Lyra doe. Meanwhile, I’ll be reaching out to Eddie’s (Edna) owner to try and get a doe from Lyra’s best offspring 🤞

Potato harvest is in 🎉

I planted about half as many russets as elbas. The russets were from a bag of organic potatoes from Kroger. The elbas came from Johnny’s seeds about 3 or 4 years ago. They’ve done well, store ok from one season to the next, but I wasn’t thrilled with the volume produced.

So I tried the russets. Same space, between the elbas, but absolutely dismal results. They apparently don’t like it here and would be happier in Idaho 😆

Plenty of elbas though, and after the russet experiment I’m absolutely thrilled with their productivity 😁

I was thrilled to see these two praying mantis on the doe run fence, thought I might have interrupted a breeding attempt, but they look to me to both be female even though one is smaller 🤷‍♀️

I’m happy to see them because, if I’m not mistaken, these are native Carolina praying mantis… I’ve been trying to find some to buy but they’re always out of stock. Happy to see a few “in the wild.” 😁
