There's a legend behind the name. In the 13th century, wounded knight Gaspard de Stérimberg reportedly retreated to a hill overlooking the Rhône, became a hermit, and cultivated vines there. His “hermitage” is said to have given the hill—and eventually the famous Hermitage wines—their name.
