It's time for a farmstead update: and today's is about the garden! Despite having some major pest issues in our first year on this property, we are having fun growing some new to us plants.

Snapdragons have made the veggie garden a brighter and much more cheery place! Zucchini planted for the first time in several years are just starting to produce. Lemon balm has been a delightful addition to our herbal tea options. Potatoes aren't new to us, but we planted a ton and they are growing like weeds, despite the little black beetles chewing holes in all their leaves!

Happy gardening, friends! πŸŒ±πŸ…πŸŒ»πŸ₯”

After waiting and waiting for the weather to cooperate, I think we are finally ready to finish planting out our vegetable garden! Cold hardy plants started going in the ground the end of April, were mulched yesterday with composted chicken bedding, and hopefully the remainder of the plants in the cold frame can go out this weekend.

We are learning how to garden in much different soil than we were used to in the past, so plenty of opportunities for growth!

Are you growing vegetables this year? What are you trying that's new?

Have you ever heard of water glassing eggs?

It's a great method that's been around for ages that was especially used when refrigeration was not an option. And even better, water glassed eggs can last at room temperature for up to a year or more and still taste fresh!

In order to preserve some eggs for the winter when our hens slow their production, we are giving this a try this spring while we have an over abundance of eggs. I'm using a 5 gallon bucket, 8 quarts of non-chlorinated water, 8 ounces of pickling lime, and dozens of eggs!

If you are interested in some how to information and a couple videos, check out this blog link that helped me get started!

Today we are talking about chicken feed. Think about this statement: "What you put in is what you get out." This applies to so many areas of life!

We have been very intentional about what we feed our chickens because we want them to be as healthy as possible and we remember that what they eat affects the quality and contents of their eggs. We love having fresh, nourishing eggs so we try to feed our chickens the best we can find.

For us, that means sourcing New Country Organics classic grind layer feed from a local farm. It is not only organic and non-GMO, but also soy-free. Soy is high in phytic acid which inhibits the absorption of vitamins and minerals, and studies are showing that a diet high in soybeans is unhealthy to livestock and humans.

We soak the feed for a day before feeding it to our hens and are hoping to try fermenting it soon. Of course our chickens eat plenty of greens and bugs too πŸ›πŸ¦—

As we learn, we are adapting our practices to be as healthy and sustainable as possible. What small changes have you been making in your lifestyle as you learn and grow?

It's meet the chickens day here at Maple Haven Farmstead πŸ“

We currently have 17 hens from 9 different breeds: Barred Plymouth Rock, Partridge Plymouth Rock, Welsummer, Blue Cochin, Golden Comet, Rhode Island Red, Easter Egger, Golden Laced Wyandotte, and a mystery hen whose breed we still haven't figured out πŸ˜‰

Having so many different breeds (and unique individuals) means a beautiful variety of egg colors too! My daughter knows which egg comes from which chicken (and I think I'm learning!).

Our chickens love to follow us around when we are out in the yard and they also love to scratch in my mulch beds for tasty grubs πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ

Let me know what else you'd like to learn about chickens in general or our hens in particular!
