I’m going to say this once, publicly, because I will NOT stay quiet when a horse’s history is being misrepresented in a way that could get a child hurt.

The pony in these screenshots is the same mare that bucked me off one month ago. That wreck resulted in an arterial dissection and strokes on both sides of my brain. I lost part of my vision, spent time in the hospital, and have spent the last month recovering.

I owned this mare before her current owner. Her history and the circumstances of my wreck were fully disclosed when she left my possession.

Now, after being with her current owner for roughly three weeks, she is being advertised as a “good solid pony that would make a youth or small adult happy” and people are being encouraged to “come let your kiddo fall in love.”

Absolutely not.

I am not saying this mare is worthless, evil, or incapable of being a useful horse. She is handy. She has worked cattle. She has plenty of ability. In the right hands, she may have a job and do it well.

But HANDY DOES NOT MEAN KID SAFE.

And three weeks of good rides does not erase what happened a month ago.

Horses are horses. Even the safest ones can have bad days, and anyone buying one assumes some level of risk. But there is a HUGE difference between acknowledging that risk and knowingly leaving out recent, serious history while marketing a horse toward children.

If an experienced adult wants the whole story and decides this mare is worth the risk for them, that is their decision. But a parent deserves the whole truth before putting their child in that saddle.

I don’t care if speaking up makes me unpopular. I don’t care if it costs someone a sale. And I don’t care if I’m told it’s “not my horse anymore.”

I know what happened. I know what was disclosed. And I will not sit quietly and watch this mare be represented as a youth horse without saying something.

Sell horses. Make money. Find them jobs that suit them. But for the love of God, tell the truth about them. A sale is never worth somebody’s kid getting hurt.

Pint size Jumanji aka Flakes

If you’ve ever watched Tyler Wade’s Jumanji and thought, “Man, I wish I had one just like that,” today’s your lucky day.

Flakes is a 4 year old, 14 hand grade mare with one job description: go to work.

She’s been in the feedyard, drug calves, gathered plenty of pasture cattle, and doesn’t get weak in the knees when an angry mama cow comes unglued.

Now for the disclaimer…

She is not a pet.

If you’re looking for something that’ll meet you at the gate with its ears up because you brought cookies, this ain’t her. She’d actually prefer if we kept this relationship professional.

She’s watchy on the ground and generally thinks life is a little suspicious until you climb on. She’s hard to catch, but get close enough to casually drape a lead rope over her neck and she’ll stand there.

She saddles like she should, stands tied, picks up all four feet, and is easy to trim.

Once your butt hits the saddle, she forgets she was worried about literally everything five minutes ago. Point her at a cow and she turns into the employee everyone wishes they had. No HR meetings. No complaints. Just goes to work.

She’s the kind of horse that separates the folks who like to wear cowboy hats from the folks who actually use them.

Would I recommend her for your kid’s first horse? Absolutely not.

Would I recommend her for the teenager who’s serious about learning to be a hand instead of just looking like one? Every day of the week.

She’s got plenty of try, plenty of grit, and absolutely zero interest in being an emotional support animal.
