It has been awhile.

The farmers have been taking some much needed time to reflect, reset and reconfigure a few things.

Last year was a hard year. A really hard year.

This year no matter what happens we will make the best of it.

We are rounding the end of our first kidding season - we have 46 kids on the ground with a projection of 60, good Lord willing. These kids will be market ready for Easter!

Our second Kidding season will begin in April and Lambs will drop in May!

We welcomed a new Katahdin ram named Dagby to the flock. We are very excited to see the impact of his genetics on the flock.

Along with an influx of adorable bouncing baby goats comes the tough decisions of who to keep as replacement stock and who to let go. With keeping our current plans in mind and a tight leash from Farmer Larry… we have made a few selections for future herd successors.

Our next project comes in March - we are going to take in about 25 bottle kids and raise them up for a few fun projects! Farmer Larry has a pilot project in mind with using these critters as natural ladscapers, a few boys will be sold off as future herd sires and im sure one or two may worm thier way into our hearts as life long residents at LLLEL.

We have acquired two new herd sires for Laynes project - operation goat milk soap! Last year Farmer Larry secured some perfect dairy goats for this project and together we have purchased two very handsome dairy herd sires for these ladies.

This year our name theme is Vikings. Siktrigar and Ragnar started us off. Some of our replacement ladies include Brida, Gisela, Cleopatra (because Farmer Larry picks names too) and Critter.

We have been making new plans for our egg layers - specifically a new coop and a whole new flock to start laying in the fall. We will be hatching some chicks from our current flock really soon.

The spring we will also be raising a new creatures on the farm. Farmer Larry won me over - PIGS ARE COMING and we are low key excited!

We are also making plans for mobile chicken tractors to raise meat birds - stay tuned for our progress and updates. We plan on raising about 30 at a time to process and be ready for the freezer in about 8-10 week increments.

We are envisioning a big beautiful garden this year from veggies to flowers! There are also plans in the works for an orchard.

The long day herbs have been started in the grow room and have begun to come in strong. There will be plenty of starts available for purchase when the season comes around.

Big plans and even bigger dreams are unfolding at the farm this year. We are so happy to share our journey with you all! Stay tuned for more updates.

Let me tell you about my old freind sweet sweet Kale, Kaleykin, kancle Kale, Kinney kin….

Like much of our creatures Kale was special. She had a rough entry into the world seven years ago. She was born at a mere pound, she should’ve been around 10. She was so stuck I needed help to get her out. When kids are born that way they are at risk and usually don’t make it.

Through bottle feeding every two hours and living in a basket, coming to work, riding in the truck, living in the kitchen for about 6 months she made it. She beat all the odds. Kale was one of my constants. We have been through several jobs changes, a couple big moves. I almost lost her when she kidded two years ago but with a whole lot of care and love she pulled through again.

Sweet Kale had been through so much in her life. Never missed a meal and definitely would let you know if you were even a minute late with her snacks.

After moving back to Vermont Kale started to show her age and started to slow down on us. We decided to keep her life long freind BokChoy with her and they lived happily with the sheep in retirement. The two of them kept track of one another and BokChoy kept a close watch over his lady.

Kale always did everything on her terms like the spoiled queen she was.

Kale took a tumble down the hill by the pond Friday. Her lover let us know there was trouble and amidst all of our efforts our beloved freind did not meet us at the gate this morning.

Her distinct hellos will be greatly missed. We lost our matriarch and our mascot. We know it’s all part of farming and unfortunately our for legged inspirations don’t live forever though we wished they did.

Rest easy my old freind there will be endless snacks and grass waiting just for you.

We have been focusing on different projects the last couple of weeks. Larry finished up the little Rabbit abode today. We have been taking what we have and making it work in true farmer fashion!

We also added a new genetic line to the rabittry as well. We picked up a beautiful Rex buck named Cashew who will be the foundation buck for this new line. Along with Cashew came Peanut a beautiful little Rex baby and Walnut an equally beautiful ready to breed doe. We also got two Holland Lop Does who just make my heart happy. One is a wee babe (who doesn’t have a name quite yet) and the other is an almost ready to breed doe named Mouse.

In the fall we will be offering Holland Lop, Mini Rex and Angora babies. As always we are offering meat rabbit babies and fully processed as well.

Our future egg layers are finally big enough to “fence train.” We have been keeping them in the transition tractor until they got a bit larger so they could no longer squeeze through their mobile fence. Today was their first day with a full run of the fence and they did great! Soon these lovely ladies will be on pasture patrol following behind the sheep and goats eating all of the ticks, bugs and parasites from the soil all while turning those nutrients into delicious eggs! By next week we will have their on the go tractor completed and they will start on pasture patrol. We still have a little bit longer to wait for egg production to begin.

We have been moving and building and situating! Here are some of the latest photos from the farm. We have about 76 juvenile laying hens who are going into chicken tractors. We have three groups of grazing rotations of boer goats, Nigerian dwarf goats and sheep. We are still in the process of getting the kids to their new shed and the rabbits into the rabbitry. Stay tuned for our next projects and updates 😊
