I brought some new friends home this weekend!

These three gals ( plus a ewe lamb) are settling in quite nicely. I'll give them a week to get up to speed on my feeding system then they'll move into my Wensleydale flock.

Funny thing about these ewes....

This spring I decided that I wanted to add some more Longwools to my Wensleydale flock. I found some nice fleeced BFL × Border Leicester ewes in Wisconsin that I thought would fit right in. Unfortunately that deal fell through and I gave up on adding more ewes.

Last week, a Wensleydale friend of mine called me out of the blue. He wanted to down size his flock a bit. He offered me these ewes at a reasonable price, just to make sure they went to a good home. I jumped at the opportunity.

Sometimes things don't work out the way I plan, but they usually work out for the best!

Let's talk about rams.

Yep, it's that time of year. Rams have one job to do and they better be punching in everyday to get that job done in a timely manner.

We do a lot of things to make that job as easy as possible for them but the most important thing that we do is pull them away from the ewes during the day.

Every day.

Essentially, they are with the ewes 12 hours every night. And only at night. During the days, when it's the hottest, they are in the coolest barn that we have, resting in front of a fan. Sometimes in pairs like these two, sometimes by themselves. These two each have their own group of ewes that they head to when it's time to go to work.

And in the morning, when it's time to come in for their daily siesta, they are waiting at the gate. They know that there's breakfast waiting for them in the barn so they are happy to come in.

Sheep love a schedule. They trust a reliable shepherd.

And they will always be motivated by a delicious meal.

My livestock guard dog, Libby, has very few requests. She's a happy dog who loves her flock and understands her assignment.

The one thing that she's adamant about is fresh pool water. Daily. She turns her nose up at day old water. Only the freshest, icy cold water will do for Princess Libby.

She rarely lays down in the water, but she definitely enjoys splashing and getting her feet and belly wet.

There's a new guy in my life and he's super cool.

Night Rider is the next piece in my Merino puzzle. He's spotted, his sister is moorit ( so it's possible that he carries the moorit gene also) and his lamb fleece recently won fourth place at the Estes Park fleece show.

But best of all, he's super gentle, his conformation is impeccable, and he loves graham crackers.

How can you not love a guy with a sweet tooth?

Lots of wheels had to turn in the right direction to get this guy to me from northwest Montana but I'm sure glad they did!

(look for lambs from this handsome fellow in the Fall of 2027)

This is what freedom looks like.

I'm grateful every day to live in a place where I can raise the sheep that I want.

I'm free to work as hard as I want. I can change opportunities into reality just by setting my mind to it.

I've been gifted nothing but yet I have everything that I could ever need at my fingertips ❤️🤍💙
