Blackberry Ridge Farms

Blackberry Ridge Farms Local farm raising 100% grassfed beef. We know that what we put into our bodies makes a difference. The same goes for cattle.

Blackberry Ridge Farms began in 2015 with the purchase of 41 head of Galloway cattle and a desire to steward land that was already owned. By producing high-quality food for Winona, Minnesota and the surrounding areas, owners Will Oberton and his daughter, Erin Gervais, have partnered to make this a lasting family-owned farm. Blackberry Ridge chooses grass-fed because it's a simple way to care for

the land as well as the animals. The nutritional profile of grass-fed beef is significantly different from what many of us grew up eating. It's lower in fat and calories, higher in good fat content (Omega-3’s) and contains higher levels of carotenoids, vitamin E and minerals. Blackberry Ridge chooses Galloway cattle because of their winter hardiness, excellent meat quality and ability to calve easily. Since they calve easily on their own, they can often remain in the pasture to give birth. Plus, Galloway have a thick, shaggy coat that keeps their meat leaner, which reduces waste at the butcher. We sell our beef in various sized packages. Visit us at: blackberryridgefarms.com to learn about your ordering options!

After the orchard burn, we also had some newer plantings that required a fresh burn. and team took a gander at lighting the bluff directly across from our house, to see how well we could get the forest to clean up. It turned out, it was ready for fire! It was a very fun afternoon/evening watching it all from our dining room window!

My favorite place on our property is this old apple orchard that sits atop a bluff, surrounded by deep valleys, almost like an island. It's stunningly gorgeous and always peaceful. Over the winter we made a plan to improve the health of the orchard, which starts with a prescribed burn. The weather worked out for us to burn while we had a couple of kids home on spring break, so we had the opportunity to learn many techniques and tips from the real experts. It was a day we won't soon forget, and just the beginning of an even better orchard!

Huge thanks to and his crew for all the teaching, and most of the photos!

Producer Highlight- This post was contributed By Gabe Ericksen. On Sunday, February 9th, Restoravore visited one of our very own Pleasant Valley grass-fed-beef producers, Blackberry Ridge Farms. In spite of the cold temps and fresh snow, the sun was shining so we opted to put up with some chilly toe...

These March blizzards are beautiful!

This one prevented me from attending a farm conference, where I was super excited to learn about soil health 🤓 but I'll carve out some time today to take in new material anyway. There's so much to learn as we work on improving this land!

We were recently featured on the website, sharing our story of using the collars and how they've helped our farm! Virtual fencing is an absolute game changer, especially if you live in an area with challenging terrain. We love working with NoFence! I wasn't raised on a farm. I think I would've made a pretty good farm kid though. I really, deeply enjoy the majority of the farm work. Sometimes it's hard, usually it's dirty, some days it feels like just another thing when I don't have space for another thing... but overall, this is worthy and fulfilling work. I pray my kids see that and chase whatever they feel is deeply worthy and fulfilling one day. (And I hope at least one of them chases farming ;)
