Ranching isn't always beautiful sunsets and baby animals and handsome cowboys in Wranglers.
To be honest, ranching is full of heartbreak, let downs, broken fences, broken down equipment, and overdrawn bank accounts.
Ranching is often a family business, that is treated nothing like a business. It's a legacy that lasts a lifetime... Sometimes, it takes a lifetime for the legacy to be passed on.
It's a lifetime of being covered in s**t and dirt and blood. It's busted up hands, broken down bodies, and worn out boots.
It's hours spent in the saddle, in equipment, and in the offices of bankers, lawyers, accountants, and sale barns.
Sometimes, the torch is passed on to the next generation, eagerly and willingly by the generations that came before. Most of the time, though, the opposite is true- the generation before digs in their heels and suddenly decides nothing can change.
Ranching is a way of life that isn't for every one. It's hard to justify a life that rarely cash flows, or even allows for vacations or breaks. It doesn't make much sense, but it gets in your blood and never really leaves.
For all of its flaws, ranching is a pretty decent way of life. Like any job, it ain't perfect, but it is what we make it.
