What I wouldn’t give for a thunderstorm...
This extra hot drought is actually overdue for NW AR. I just learned from an analysis of climate trends that our region has been an anomaly in both the US and the world. The State of Arkansas has been blessed with the smallest increase in average temperature over the past 50 years. Other states have been cooking, while Arkansas barely simmers. Inside AR, the northwest led this trend, with a few localized weather stations still recording virtually the same annual average temperature as 1970, and the entire state only warming by 1.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Remarkable. Well, our grace period is over, it seems.
As I ponder what this means for the farmer in me, I think in terms of adding ponds, digging wells, etc. Nothing logistically easy. The heat is another matter. Not many plants can take up water as fast as they lose it in this kind of heat.
This year, with irrigation unable to begin to keep up with needs, I have lost many plants, trees and bushes. Hard choices were made. I am still keeping a few crops happy. If you like pesto, you’re in luck. The Basil is doing well. I’ll bring plenty of the Lemon Sorrel that really makes pesto shine.
