Laurel Valley Iris Farm

Laurel Valley Iris Farm Laurel Valley is a small urban farm specializing in bearded iris cultivars. We are nestled between the mountains and the coast of North Carolina.

We provide online and local iris rhizome sales. I have been a lover of plants all my life, even at a very early age. I grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina in Madison County, near the Tennessee state line. My close relatives owned a nursery business within walking distance of my home growing up and it was always a treat to visit the greenhouses. As a youngster, I spent countless hour

s in the woods from early spring until late fall, gathering NC native plants and bringing them back home to cultivate. Being outdoors and in nature is where I have always felt connected. I first became interested in irises in early adulthood. Had anyone asked me then if I would have ever thought about opening a small iris growers business, I would have not had an answer. What initially began as hobby growing has grown into a passion of mine. I love to share my love and knowledge of irises with others. I have enjoyed selling locally and I am working towards developing a website and pursuing online sells as well! There is so much to look forward to with growing irises. During bloom season, everyday is a wonderful surprise. The color combinations and cultivars are endless and there is something special about seeing that first spring bloom finally open after a long, dark, winter!

I can see my daddy grinning about another Iris order arriving today. He’d always let me know how many boxes I’d gotten for the day. He’d ask me, “Where are you going to put all these? Is this the last of them or do you have more coming?” I’d just tell him, “now don’t you worry, I’ll find a place for them…and no, we will be gettin irises delivered until mid September!” Lol He was so excited to see the field coming together and all the potential blooms we’d get to enjoy next season. He’d send me pictures at work when a new one would be in bloom this spring. I know he’ll be there as I walk the rows up at the farm. He’s in my heart and that’s where he will always stay. Thank you all for the outpouring of love and support to me and my family. You all have made these past days a little less dark for us all 💜 Today’s order is brought to you all from Far West Iris Gardens.

It has been a devastating day. We lost my daddy unexpectedly early this morning. He was always so impressed by the support you guys have provided to Laurel Valley Iris Farm. Forgive me if I go silent for a period of time as we mourn this tremendous loss.

Welp, this was the first and hopefully the last time seeing this kind of mold growth on rhizomes in an order I received. I will clean them up (probably just pop the daughters off the moldy mother rhizome) and they will be fine, but this was disappointing. I’m not sure what has occurred? It looks to have only impacted three of the rhizomes.

My Stout’s order from Oklahoma was shipped on 8/14 via USPS priority. It’s just now in Memphis, TN. Explain to me exactly how that happens? It’s literally moved two states over in 11 days. This is why I don’t like using USPS.

I received another blessing box today. Kara, thank you for your kindness and sharing your abundance. I am very appreciative of these beautiful rhizomes from Enchanted Oaks! Conjuration is one of my all time favorites and I didn’t have Victoria Falls!

This is just the top portion of the box, but there are bags of named irises in here from the King County Iris Society sent to me by Caroline Zebroski. There are SDBs, MTBs, IMBs, BBs, and even TBs. It’s going to take me a minute to go through these bags and get things sorted out. A “Thank You” seems insufficient at this point; however, I am thankful beyond words.

We had a line of storms roll through this morning that dumped some rainfall but behind it came the most amazing cool air! I took the second photo of a roll cloud from the parking deck at work as the storms were approaching. I went up to the farm late this afternoon and pulled weeds for 3 hours 🤪 It’s so much easier to get them out by the root when the soil is wet, not to mention, it was 74 degrees when I left just before sunset. Tomorrow, I’ve got to rebuild several sections of rows that were lost with the flooding but I’m mentally prepared to get it done. I have five more orders yet to come and I’m hoping they get here soon. Time is swiftly passing and average frost date up at the farm in the northern counties is October 20th.
