Dubfire Reggae Band NC spotlight💫🎶There was something genuinely special and healing about last evening’s gathering✨and we want to give a very special thank you to Dubfire Reggae Band for bringing such an incredible spirit of unity, music, and energy to the Southside Food Forest!!🌳 💚🫂🌞

From sunset into moonlight, the forest was filled with reggae, dancing, laughter, community, and fresh aguas frescas beneath the trees. 🌙🎶🌳

We believe that growing belonging and community is just as important as growing food and that art, music, joy and gathering all have a place in vibrantly healthy and connected communities. 🌱💚

Thank you so much, Dubfire Reggae Band NC for sharing your music with us and making this evening so special!! 🎶✨

And thank you to everyone who came out and shared such a beautiful energy and evening with us!

From sunset to moonlight at the Southside Food Forest@Unity Park 🌅🌙✨So much more to share from this beautiful night, but we had to give Dubfire their flowers. 🥹💐🎶

🌙🦕✨ MOVIE NIGHT IN THE FOREST ✨🦕🌙

Last weekend we gathered beneath the trees at sunset and outdoor screening of The Land Before Time at the Southside Food Forest. 🌿

Blankets in the grass, a projector + a bedsheet, snacks, free vegetable plants to take home, friends and neighbors gathered together and one ridiculously beautiful sunset showing off behind the trees. 🌅💚

There’s something really special to us about creating simple spaces like this.

A garden doesn’t only have to be somewhere we grow food. It can be somewhere we rest, play, learn, make friends, watch movies, share resources, tell stories, dance, and spend an evening together. 🌱

Thank you to everyone who came, brought something for our Little Free Library + Food Pantry, donated, took home a plant, helped us set up, or simply shared the evening with us. 🫂🌻

Every little gathering helps us imagine what a neighborhood green space can be.

And seeing baby Littlefoot projected between the trees at sunset was honestly pretty magical. 😭🦕🌳✨

Next up: our Annual Food Forest Party, TOMORROW, August 29! 🌻🔥
Live reggae with The Incredible Dubfire Reggae Band from 7–9PM, followed by our Forest Dance Rave with DJ Lando + special guests from 9PM–midnight. 🪩🌿

See you back beneath the trees. 💚

🌍🌱✨FROM WINSTON-SALEM TO NAKIVALE, UGANDA 🇺🇸🤝🇺🇬 Climate resilience is already growing in Nakivale through local action led by refugees themselves.

In Nakivale Refugee Settlement, olivier mayange is a climate refugee, human rights defender, artist and permaculture designer working alongside fellow refugees through RADMIR, Refugees Association of Disability and Marginalized Rights.

“As a human rights defender, I stay positive and cannot stay without doing something better for my community.”

Despite limited resources, Olivier helps build shelters and teaches art and permaculture within his community. 🌱🎨🏡

“We are human rights defenders, artists, and permaculture designers.” 💚

Too often refugees are spoken about only through the lens of crisis, rather than as leaders already co-creating solutions, growing food, creating art, building shelter and defending human rights within their own communities.

Olivier and his community are already leading nature-based solutions🌱

Now, a growing relationship between RADMIR + Climate Refugees Initiative + Southside Food Forest@Unity Park is asking: what becomes possible when community-led food forests around the world begin learning from one another? 🌱✨🌍

Olivier dreams of expanding their work onto additional land where women, children and fellow refugees can learn permaculture, medicinal plants and animal husbandry, strengthening livelihoods and community resilience.🫂

We want to be clear.

This is about global solidarity. 🌍

It isn’t about exporting an American model to Uganda.

It is about communities exchanging knowledge across borders while local people remain the leaders, designers, storytellers & stewards of their own land.

Winston-Salem ↔ Nakivale.✨

Different lands. Different cultures. Different ecosystems.

All connected by a shared understanding that tending to the Earth is tending to our human dignity, livelihoods, biodiversity, creativity, safety, wellness, and belonging. 💚

Southside Food Forest@Unity Park in summer abundance energy🌿🌞🌸 Flowers blooming, grapes growing, pollinators moving from plant to plant, herbs spilling into pathways, young trees reaching toward the canopy… everywhere you look, something is growing. 🦋🍇🌳

One of our favorite things about a food forest is that abundance happens in layers. Rather than separating food, habitat, beauty and community into different spaces, they grow together! Fruit trees alongside flowers, vines above herbs, native and pollinator plants woven throughout, with places for people to gather, rest and simply be.✨

And all of this is happening right here in the middle of wsnc💚

To us, this is what urban biodiversity can look like: not only restoring habitat, but creating places that feel alive, nourishing and beautiful for the communities around them.

A little ecosystem, a little sanctuary, and a whole lot of life. 🌿✨

Such a lovely visit from our friends at Spark’Dwell last week! 🥰🌱 Their team is doing INCREDIBLE mutual aid + ministry work in our community, and they stopped by the Southside Food Forest@Unity Park to share lunch beneath the trees, learn more about the space, and generously drop off donations for our Little Free Food Pantry + Library. 💚

One of our favorite moments was hearing a member of their team say that after sitting in the Food Forest for a while, they “forgot the street was right there.” 🥹🌳

And honestly… that means so much to us.

In the middle of the city, we want the Food Forest to feel like a place where neighbors can find fresh food, biodiversity, beauty, shade, creativity, connection, whimsy, presence, and moments of peace. 🌼🦋

Creating that sense of sanctuary and belonging for our Southside community is just as much a part of this work as planting trees.

Thank you, Spark’Dwell for visiting, for the beautiful work you’re doing, and for pouring back into our community. We loved having you! 🫶🌿✨

🌿☔ We’re taking a cue from nature…With thunderstorms and rain in the forecast this weekend, we’re choosing to pause, rest, and let the forest soak up the nourishment it deserves.💚

For the safety of our volunteers, performers, vendors, and community, we’ve decided to postpone:

🪩 Forest Rave Dance Party (July 24)
🎉 Annual Southside Food Forest Celebration (July 25)

The good news? We’re planning to celebrate together on Saturday, August 8 (weather permitting)💚and we’re making it even more fun!

✨ Along with the Forest Rave and Annual Food Forest Celebration, we’re adding a Community Artist & Maker Market featuring local artists, growers, nonprofits, vintage vendors, makers, and small businesses.

🎨 Interested in being a vendor? We’d love to have you! Send us a DM or email us to learn more.

🌱 Volunteer Day is still on!

If the weather cooperates, we’ll be at the Food Forest this Sunday (July 26) from 2–5 PM caring for the land together. Whether you can stay for 30 minutes or the whole afternoon, we’d love to see you.

Thank you for growing with us. Sometimes the best thing we can do is follow nature’s lead. 💚🌧️

See you in the Southside Food Forest@Unity Park soon!
