The squirrel family in the U.S. splits into three kinds: tree squirrels, gliders, and ground squirrels. Most have a regional range, so no yard gets all of them, but once the groups are familiar, the striped one in the garden and the chunky one in the field both read as squirrels.

- Fox vs. gray — the fox squirrel is the bigger, rusty-orange one. The eastern gray is slimmer, with a white fringe on its tail
- The small loud one — red squirrels are about half a gray's size, live in northern conifer forests, and pile cone scraps into heaps called middens
- They don't fly — flying squirrels glide on a fold of skin between their legs. Most glides run 20 to 30 feet, though some reach 150, and they visit feeders at night
- Stuffed cheeks — chipmunks haul nuts in their cheek pouches to burrow storerooms that can hold up to half a bushel
- Count the stripes — thirteen-lined ground squirrels usually carry seven light and six dark stripes, and some sleep up to 250 days a year
- The heavyweight — the woodchuck is a squirrel too, going from about 5 pounds in spring to 14 in fall before it hibernates
