John V. Scigala, 73, of Warrenville, passed away August 23, 2026. Beloved husband of Nan Mullin Scigala; loving brother of the late Henry Scigala and sister-in-law Karen Cartwright, Elizabeth (Bill) Scigala Lamb, James (Bernadette) Scigala; proud uncle of Jimmy Scigala and Katy Cartwright-Halperin, and great uncle of Sydney.

John was an adventurer and fishing was his passion. He was an avid member of Salmon Unlimited and seized every opportunity to be on the water, John also took great pride in his garden; always looking for the "perfect bargain". John loved family and would do anything for them. He was truly a people person. He built many strong relationships over the years, and he will be deeply missed. John was a natural storyteller, we will all miss his lively tales, endless texts and YouTube videos that kept us laughing. GONE FISHING. CATCH YOU LATER, JOHN.

This past Saturday we were able to get in our last of five club tournaments. The weather was rougher than we had hoped, but luckily there were fish in close, and no one needed to make a long run to find fish.

The day ended with Capt. Jim Parquette and Team Ezperanza taking 1st place for the day. Taking 2nd place and securing top rookie boat for the day was Team NETworking headed up by Capt. Tony Boshold. Taking 3rd place was Team Follow Me captained by Kevin Massard. 4th place and the small boat award went to Team My Lady captained by Brian Hameder. 5th place went to Team Live Each Day and Capt. Steve Ruggiero. Team 100 Proof captained by William Plessner secured the big target fish prize with an 8-pound coho, and they won the big three prize.

Overall, the end the year standings were similar to how boats placed in the last tournament. Team Ezperanza won Boat of the Year honors with a 400-point perfect season. Congratulations on a fantastic season. Team Nauti Donzi captained by Andy Knapp secured 2nd place and Team Follow Me captained by Kevin Massard won 3rd place. Well done guys, great season and congratulations again. Team My Lady and Capt. Brian Hameder won the Small Boat Award. Our Rookie Boat of the Year was Team NETworking captained by Tony Boshold.

The big fish for the year was a 24-pound king salmon caught by Team Luna captained by Vaidas Vlba.

Congratulations to all our winners and great year. We are already looking forward to next year.

For tomorrow's tournament, we are closely watching the weather forecast. Unless a Small Craft Advisory is issued, we do plan on holding this tournament. We will post any updates on this page as soon as possible. All boats and crews, regardless of their size, do need to make their own decision whether the conditions on the lake are within their limits and level of safety.

We had a great meeting last night at the Winthrop Harbor Yacht Club. It was good to see many members who don’t normally attend our meetings in Wood Dale. Here is a recap of the meeting and what is happening in the club:
- Captain Caleb Zorn provided an interesting presentation on jigging for salmon and trout in all seasons. The video of that presentation has been posted on the Salmon Unlimited Members Only page.
- We are looking for someone to take over the Secretary position in the club. The job primarily consists of taking the minutes at each of the board meetings. If you are interested in joining our Board of Directors as the Secretary for the club, please reach out to a board member or email us at: [email protected].
- Membership is up to 470 members for the year. If you know of someone who should be a member, please encourage them to join. Memberships only cost $20 for the remainder of this year. You do need to be a member to gain access to the Members Only page.
- Our last tournament of the year is August 22nd. Like we did last year, there will not be an entry fee for this last tournament. If you ever wanted to try fishing in a club tournament, this is a great opportunity to do so. All persons participating in the tournament do need to be a member and sign the electronic waiver that is available on our website.
- We are looking for a new venue to host our April Pizza Party. The venue needs to be big enough to host over a hundred people, and be centrally located for all our members. If you have any suggestions, send us an email.
- The recent Veterans Outing was a great success, with 36 veterans hosted on 10 boats. We would like to make this event bigger next year. If you would like to host veterans next year, and have a boat that is at least 25 feet, please send us an email. We plan to have the Veterans Outing on August 6, 2027 next year.
- The Kids Derby is our last big event for the year, and will be held on September 12, 2026 at Waukegan Harbor. Online registration is now open on our website.
