Joseph Wright
Well-known throughout Winthrop for his signature cowboy hat that became his trademark Joseph F. Wright, affectionately known as “Cowboy Joe,” passed away in Boston on November 26, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on July 30, 1947, in Chelsea, Joe was a long-time resident of Winthrop, where he became a beloved figure in the community.
At an early age, Joe enlisted in the Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War, stationed in Germany. His dedication and commitment earned him the rank of Sergeant, a role he fulfilled with honor and distinction. Following his honorable discharge, Joe transitioned into a successful career in customer service at Boston Safe Deposit and Trust, where his warmth and friendly demeanor left a lasting impression on colleagues and clients alike.
Joe was well-known throughout Winthrop for his signature cowboy hat that became his trademark. With this iconic headgear, he embraced the persona of “Cowboy Joe,” bringing a touch of the Wild West to the coastal town. His jovial spirit and iconic look made him a favorite among residents, who often shared smiles and stories in his presence.
He was the beloved son of the late Winifred (Hender) and Gilbert Wright; dear brother of Dorothy Hanes of Syracuse, New York, Donald Wright of Methuen, Grace Knipe of Cheshire, Connecticut and Shirley Wright of Saugus and is also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
Family and friends are cordially invited to attend the visitation from the Caggiano-O’Maley-Frazier Funeral Home, Winthrop on Saturday, December 6 from 4 to 6 p,m. followed by a funeral service in the funeral home at 6 p.m. Interment will be private.
