When can you use calf birth weight/size as an indicator of adult size?
The best indicator of adult size will always be the size of the parents and full siblings. Calf birth weight/size can be greatly affected by the mother's age and condition. Very young and very old cows typically have smaller birth weight calves, though the calves fully mature to be the same size as full siblings. Cows with poor milk capacity can raise calves that grow very slowly while cows with excellent milk capacity/quality can raise calves that grow very quickly. Milk capacity does not effect genetic size; the cow with the good milk capacity will just have a calf that weans larger (and healthier) and reaches full genetic size (and reproduction age) sooner.
