Our garden and I are currently in a complicated relationship. 😂

There were plans.

There were seeds.

There was excitement.

And then Texas said, “That’s cute.” ☀️

Some things made it.
Some things absolutely did not.
And some things are hanging on out of pure stubbornness.

But we’re learning.

What grows here.
What doesn’t.
When to plant.
When NOT to plant.
And how much we still don’t know.

I could show you only the pretty parts.

But this is what learning to grow your own food actually looks like sometimes.

Nobody warned me that homesteading would involve this much walking around looking for things.

Where are the gloves?

Who had the drill last?

Where did we put the feed scoop?

Has anybody seen the hose nozzle?

WHY are the scissors out here?! 😂

Half of farm chores are actual chores.

The other half is trying to remember where you laid something down 10 minutes ago.

Please tell me we’re not alone. 😂

Homestead lesson #4,672:

Never say, “That should only take about 20 minutes.” 😂

It will not.

You’ll need a tool you can’t find.
Then a part you don’t have.
Then you’ll discover something ELSE that needs fixing.

Three hours later you’re sweaty, dirty, hungry and standing in Tractor Supply trying to remember what you originally went outside to do.

Please tell me this isn’t just us. 😂

We’re not building this place just for us.

That thought crosses my mind a lot.

Every tree we plant.
Every fence we fix.
Every little thing we learn.
Every project that takes twice as long as we thought it would.

We’re building a place where our family can gather.

Where grandbabies can get dirty.
Where meals can stretch around a big table.
Where stories will be told over and over.
Where somebody always knows they can come home.

We may never see every dream we have for this land finished.

But maybe that’s okay.

We’re planting roots for people we love.

And giving them wings to build dreams of their own. 🤎

Egg collecting around here is basically an Easter egg hunt every day. 😂

Sure, we have nesting boxes.

Do all of the hens agree that those are where eggs belong?

Absolutely not.

Apparently a perfectly good nesting box cannot compete with a random corner, a bucket, some hay, or whatever secret location they’ve chosen this week.

And then you find the stash.

“WHOSE EGGS ARE THESE AND HOW LONG HAVE THEY BEEN HERE?” 😂🥚

Chicken people... please tell me ours aren’t the only ones.

Current status around here:

The grass grows faster than we can cut it.

There’s always at least one gate we have to go back and make sure we latched.

Someone is yelling from the pasture. Usually a goat. Sometimes us. 😂

We have approximately 937 things on the project list.

And somehow, every time we finish one, we add three more.

I’m beginning to think a homestead is never actually “finished.”

Maybe that’s part of the fun. 🤎

There’s something about a quiet Sunday morning out here.

Before the chores get going.
Before the animals start demanding breakfast.
Before the day gets loud.

Just a few minutes to look around and remember Who gave us all of this in the first place.

Not just the land.

The family.
The work.
The dreams.
The opportunity to begin again.
Even the things we’re still waiting and praying for.

Chores are mostly done.
The heat is finally letting up.
The animals are settling down.
And for a few minutes, nobody needs anything.

Okay... somebody probably needs something. 😂

But we’re pretending they don’t.

Things we have learned about goats:

If you leave it out, they’ll investigate it.

If you put it away, they’ll try to find it.

If you build a fence, they’ll inspect your workmanship.

If you turn your back for 30 seconds, somebody is doing something they KNOW they’re not supposed to be doing. 😂

Basically, raising goats is just living with tiny farm toddlers who can climb.

And we love the little troublemakers anyway. 🤎🐐

One thing this Texas summer has taught us...

Water first. Everything else can wait. 😂☀️

Before projects.
Before mowing.
Before whatever big plan we thought we were tackling that day.

Check the animals.
Fresh water.
Shade.
Then check it AGAIN.

August heat on a farm in TEXAS is NO JOKE!!

We’re still learning as we go, but one thing we’ve figured out pretty quickly is that the animals don’t care what’s on our to-do list. 😂

They come first. 🤎
