Over the past several months, weโve been evaluating alternative methods for improving access and efficiency in steep, brush-heavy terrain common throughout Southwest Virginia.
Our program currently consists of **four goatsโ๐บ๐๐๐๐, ๐ป๐๐๐๐๐๐, ๐ฉ๐๐๐๐, and ๐บ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐โ**who have begun initial integration into training operations.
(We are currently working through some minor naming conflicts, as we also have a K9 named Scout, and every time โTrackerโ is called out, at least one human tracker answers.)
Goats have demonstrated a natural ability to:
โข Navigate rugged, uneven terrain with ease
โข Move through dense vegetation and briar thickets
โข Carry lightweight equipment into remote areas
While initially considered strictly for logistical support, recent training has revealed unexpected potential alongside our K9 teams.
During controlled exercises, select goats have shown the ability to associate specific scents with a reward, prompting further evaluation into basic scent discrimination work. While they are not a replacement for certified K9 teams, early indications suggest they may serve as a supplemental asset in low-speed, high-containment search areasโparticularly in areas where traditional K9 operations may be limited by terrain, heat, or prolonged operational periods.
Preliminary data suggests a measurable impact on search effectiveness, with internal modeling now accounting for a modified probability equation:

So far, results have been promisingโthough handlers report occasional issues with stubbornness and selective obedience during high-value snack encounters.
