โDoes he neck rein?โ
โCan my 8-year-old ride him?โ
โCan he sort cows, drag a log, trail ride alone, babysit Grandma, and probably do my taxes?โ

And then we get the messages from people with a $4,000โ$6,000 budget who want the $15,000 horse.
They don't want the cheaper horse because:
โHe doesnโt neck rein.โ
โHeโs a little pokey.โ
โHe has some arthritis.โ
โHe has an old scar.โ
โHe isnโt fancy enough.โ
โHe needs more training.โ
โHeโs older.โ
โHe has a quirk.โ
MY FRIENDโฆ YOU HAVE A $5,000 BUDGET. NOT A $15,000 BUDGET THAT YOUโRE TRYING TO MANIFEST. ๐
Hereโs the uncomfortable truth:
GOOD HORSES ARENโT CHEAP.
CHEAP HORSES ARENโT NECESSARILY BAD.
BUT CHEAP HORSES ARE RARELY PERFECT.
And there is a HUGE difference between a cheap horse and a bad horse.
A $5,000 horse might be a perfectly good horse that simply isn't finished like a $15,000 horse.
Maybe he doesn't neck rein.
Maybe he's more โWhoaโ than โGo.โ
Maybe she's 18 instead of 8.
Maybe she has some arthritis.
Maybe he has an old scar.
Maybe she needs another 30 rides.
Maybe he isn't going to win the World Championship, but he'll pack your kids around the trail all day and stand tied to the trailer without turning into a rodeo. ๐
THAT'S CALLED REALITY.
The horse doesn't care what you wish your budget was.
The seller doesn't control the laws of economics.
And Facebook Marketplace is not the Make-A-Wish Foundation for horses. ๐
If you have $5,000 to spend, that's GREAT.
There are good horses in that price range.
But you need to decide what you're willing to compromise on.
Want a finished, fancy, young, sound, experienced, neck-reining, bombproof, push-button horse with no blemishes, no arthritis, no quirks and 15 years of experience?
You're probably going to need to move the decimal point. ๐ฐ๐
Want to stay under $5,000?
Then maybe your expectations need to come down from โfuture world championโ to โhonest horse that will get the job done.โ
And honestly?
Some of the best horses we've ever been around weren't the prettiest, fanciest, most expensive horses.
They were the ones that were HONEST.
So know your budget.
Know what you're actually looking for.
Know what you're willing to overlook.
And quit expecting a $5,000 horse to come with a $20,000 rรฉsumรฉ. ๐

The horse market isn't broken.
Your expectations and your wallet just need to have a meeting. ๐
