Did you know?

For an extra fee, you can register your working farm dogs…. This registration allows the town to know that you have working dogs, and protects the dogs from complaints.

Our guardian dogs work the hours we can’t. Overnight, weekends, midday work days. They hear, see, and smell better than we do. And they know their job.

Border collies are poetry in motion. These dogs live to herd, and to please their people. A job that is impossible without dogs, is a pleasure with them.

Last spring, our new lambs got separated when the ewes went out to pasture for the first time. Two groups: lambs who have never left the barnyard, and ewes who haven’t seen fresh grass in five months. If you know sheep, you know that neither of these groups are going anywhere…. Until Elsa and Ben insist.

Our dogs have saved us literally hundreds of hours (and the most stressful of farming hours).

So, when a neighbor screams obscenities at you, because the dogs woke him up? You call the town dog warden, and he backs you up, and you thank your lucky stars that you live in a state where legislation has protected working dogs’ ability to DO THEIR JOBS, night or day, rain or shine, so farmers, too, get to sleep at night.

Thanks dogs. Thanks friendly neighbors. Thanks . Thanks .

The guy screaming at us today? Not so much…😕

Long move this evening. From a shade paddock in the trees, up onto the side of this hillside. Only one lamb made a crazy dash down the hill into the woods on the way…😳

This is the first year our sheep have grazed off the farm.

They did an amazing job on the long move (thank you neighbors and border collies!), and the water wagon has been instrumental, too.

The field they’re grazing is surrounded by woods, and I’ve heard coyotes close in around us as I set up new paddocks in the evening, so the guard dogs have felt vital to our peace of mind in this new set up. What might seem threatening (coyote music), is quite lovely when you aren’t fearful of livestock predation.

Research shows that coyotes that are not conditioned to predate on livestock are actually protective, keeping other packs out of their territory.

Still, livestock guardians help us sleep at night—and make sure we don’t test this theory too directly.

Welcome Figgy! This guy comes to us from , by one of their Dutch Spotted rams. Fig is out of a 3/4 Suffolk ewe, and we hope he will bring us some heavy, fast growing lambs to add to our meat production next season. He’s not bad looking, either!

This time of year doesn’t leave a lot of time for thinking. The weather and plants just keep you rolling from one thing to the next. Pastures, hay, health checks, gardens, planting, harvesting, and a little fun in the sun here and there…
